Motorola Inc. and Research In Motion Ltd. have sued each other over mobile-phone patents, each claiming the other is using handset technology without permission. Motorola, the biggest U.S. maker of mobile phones, on Saturday asked a U.S. judge in Marshall, Texas, to order Research In Motion to stop the infringement. That company filed its own suit in federal court in Dallas the same day over similar claims. Winning the dispute would help the victor bolster its rank in the market for "smart phones" that can send e-mail, whose sales are growing almost six times as fast as that of the overall industry.

Earthquake Felt Across Large Parts of Britain

Crude Oil Prices Continue to Increase

Crude oil rose for a fourth day Monday after Iran's oil minister said OPEC may reduce production when it meets next month. That's a real bummer if they do that again. General Mills Lifts Annual Earnings Outlook

Minneapolis-based food maker General Mills raised its fiscal 2008 earnings guidance on higher-than-expected sales growth. Pace of Deficit More Than Double Last Years

The federal budget deficit is running at a pace that is more than double last year's imbalance through the first four months of the budget year. In its monthly review of the government's finances, the Treasurey Department said Tuesday that the budget was in surplus in January, but the deficit totals $87.7 billion so far this budget year, double the $42.2 billion imbalance recorded during the same period in 2007. The new budget year started last October l.

Whirlpool Quarterly Profits Climb 72 Percent

Whirlpool Corp. said its fourth-quarter profit climbed 72 percent, helped by its Maytag acquisition and an improved product mix and the weak dollar. Quarterly revenue grew 7 percent to $5.33 billion from $5 billion a year earlier.

U.S. Military Not Prepared on the Homefront

The U.S. military is not ready for a catastrophic attack on the country, and National Guard forces do not have the equipment or training they need for the job, according to a report. Even fewer Army National Guard units are combat ready today than were nearly a year ago when the Commission on the National Guard and reserves determined that 88 percent of the units were not prepared for the fight, said a new report just released. The independent commission is charged by Congress to recommend changes in law and policy concerning the Guard and reserves. Nancy Reagan Hospitalized After Fall

Former first lady Nancy Reagan was expected to spend a second night at a hospital as a precaution after a falling down in her Bel-Air home. U.N. Staff Member Falls to Death

A woman who worked for the United Nations died Sunday after falling from the 19th floor of the U.N.'s Secretarial Building. Senate Votes Ban on CIA Waterboarding

The Senate voted Wednesday to prohibit the CIA from using waterboarding and other harsh interrogation methods on terror suspects despite President Bush's threat to veto any measure that limits the agency's interrogation techniques. The prohibition was contained in a bill authorizing intelligence activities for the current year. The bill would restrict the CIA to the 19 interrogation techniques outlined in the Army field manual. The company behind the Blackberry smart phones said Monday's three hour outage was caused by an upgrade designed to increase capacity. Mentally Disabled Attackers Reportedly Used in Market

Two women, described as mentally disabled and strapped with remote controlled explosives, were possibly used as unwitting suicide bombers. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Sunday ruled out a broad military operation in the Gaza Strip, deflecting rising anger after an 8 year old boy lost a leg in a Palestinian rocket attack. However, Israel's top diplomat warned it will be impossible to reach a peace agreement with Palestinians as long as the Hamas rulers of Gaza continue to push violence. Ohmert said they should not let anger be their operational plan, in response to clamoring for a full-scale invasion of northern Gaza to take over the areas where militants have been launching the rockets. There were calls for the Cabinet for assassinating Hamas political leaders. residents of the battered town of Sderot near Gaza blocked the main highway entrance into Jerusalem as the Cabinet met.
