I was thinking about taking a vacation this winter in Florida. In checking the Internet I found that one of the best beaches is in destin florida. I had no idea there was so much to do in Destin. We love to fish and they have the best fishing. The white sand beaches are just calling to me too. And there are so many fine restaurants and nightlife there to enjoy. Our lamps are very old. I would venture to guess that we bought them in the l970's. I really feel it is about time to get some new home lighting. Sounds like More Snow is on the Way

It sounds like we could have more snow for Christmas. I think we are to get flurries later today or tonight and then more on Sunday. Next week sounds like it might be a snowy week too. We have huge piles of snow everywhere already. It makes it hard for the landlord to know where to put it all. Especially if we get a great deal of snow and it blows, then he has to push the piles way back into the yards. We end up patching the grass every Spring but it always comes back.

New Crockpot

My new crock pot came yesterday. I got it FREE with points from taking surveys with a company on the Internet. It is really a nice one and my old one had to be 30 years old at least. It just didn't seem to be heating right anymore. It didn't have a removable pot that you could take to the table and serve or put in the refrigerator with leftovers in it. That is a great advantage. It also has a "keep warm" feature which is really neat. I am so happy to have it.

Wisconsin Family Visit

Pizza Tonight

We have been home since Sunday with all the weather that went through here. I have cooked and cooked. But tonight it is my night to enjoy someone else's cooking. Tonight we took in the buffet at Pizza Ranch. They also have the best broasted chicken for miles around. Tomorrow it is back to the stove to make meals again but for tonight it was fun to get out.

Blizzard

Boy did we have a big bad blizzard in our part of the country. We had so much snow, it blew into huge snowdrifts so you couldn't really measure it. We think we got 6+ inches. I know just an hour from us they got 11 inches and other parts got even more. We stayed in the house for two days watching the snow blow by the windows. Driving wasn't allowed in our State at all. I am glad it is over but now we have sub zero temperatures and it is still dangerous to be outside for longer than a few minutes.

Glove Weather

Good Doctor's Report

My husband spit up a little blood two mornings in a row. We thought we better have it checked out. So he went to the doctor and she took a chest x-ray. Suspected IRA Dissidents Charged With Attack

News out of Belfast, Northern Ireland said that two suspected Irish Republican Army dissidents have been charged with attempting to kill an off-duty police officer near the province's border and the Republic of Ireland last week. They were 26 and 32 years of age and were among three suspects arrested after gunmen tried to ambush the officer in Garrison, a lakeside border village in the westernmost corner of Northern Ireland on Saturday.

Household Chores/911 call

This was one of those days. I washed all the bedding on two beds. Then washed the dogs comforter that she sleeps on. Had to run to the store for cough syrup and sudafed for my husband who has a cold and terrible cough. Got home and made a big batch of homemade rice soup. Next was the kitchen floor. Since my knee revision, it has been sadly neglected. I got it swept and mopped and it looks great. Also the bathrooms got cleaned again. Then it was time to get the mail, so went to the Post Office and got stamps. Decided to wash the car before it gets any colder and freezes the doors shut. Got into the car wash. Door shuts on both ends. Put my money in and it wouldn't take it. Used the cell phone and called 911 and told her my problem and we both laughed and she called the owner of the car wash. He took my money and got it going. I told him I drove to the front thinking it would let me out since I hadn't paid, but the door didn't open. He said it should have. I am just glad I had the cell phone with me.

More Birthdays

My brother had another birthday November 10. Seems there are quite a few birthdays in November. One of our sons is having a birthday November 23 and for his birthday, he is probably going to get a new little niece or nephew. They don't know which yet but it isn't long now. Just a few more days. Thoughts on Life and Death

No matter how old you live to be, life is short. The Bible says life is like a vapor. That is certainly true. As you get older, you look back and wonder where all those years went so quickly. Also, there is joy in Heaven when a Christian who has accepted Jesus as Savior, passes from this life into Heaven. Today, a family member passed from this life to Heaven and she is no longer burdened with the illness of this world. For her it is a happy day, but for her immediate family it is also a sad day of loss of a loved one.

The Babies are on the Way

We will soon have two more great grandchildren. What is your guess? Are they going to be boys or girls? We know that one is going to be a boy for sure. But the other one is anyone's guess. I am guessing a boy there too. So I won't be surprised if we have two new great grandsons before Christmas. What fun having new babies for Christmas.

Rain Again

It is raining again. We had about 3 decent days and the farmers were trying very hard to get into wet fields and get the crops out. Doctor Exams

It is that time again when we have lots of doctor appointments. Fasting blood tests are on the list with follow up appointments. Then now they require a doctor's breast exam before you can have a mammogram. My knee surgery checkup is due in 2 weeks too. When I had it done in August, I never thought we would have snow before my last checkup but we have had a little snow about 3 times. That is way too early.

Mail Time

It is time to go get the mail. We have about a quarter of a block to walk to our mailboxes. They are all locked and secured so you need your key. The weather has been rotten so it isn't the most fun walking to get the mail. And then to find out it is all ads and catalogs. Now is the season for catalogs by the dozen. A letter would be most welcome instead of all the junk mail.

Snow in October

It just keeps snowing overnight. We are about 30 degrees below normal around here. We should not have any snow until at least November sometime. Now there is all kinds of rain and snow on the corn and beans. The farmers are going to have to spend a lot of money to dry the corn, if they can just get it out of the fields. The weather is not cooperating. They say we could see more flakes tonight.

The Coffee Pot Died

It was the morning the coffee pot died. It would heat up the plate under the pot but would not pump any water through. We tried everything we could think of. Then poured hot water through the coffee in the filter and that was ok but not perfect. So we got in the car and went to the store. Sight Reading Music

I love to play the piano. Also, I enjoy so much listening to someone else play. I envy their ability to just sit down and seemingly effortlessly play music without hesitation. For myself, it is different.

School Sales of Products

We have a number of children in our neighborhood who are in school. Now is the time they all seem to come around selling everything from pizza to chocolate. I bought two frozen cherry pies this time. Last time I got 2 apple pies.

Headstart Bus

The little yellow Headstart Bus is driving up now every morning to pick up the little 3 year old next door. She has cried for the last two mornings but I am sure once she gets to school she has a very good time. I used to be a bus aide for Headstart and watched the kids that were on my bus grow up. Mexican Food

Tonight we are going out for Mexican food. We haven't been out there for nearly a month due to my surgery. Today our favorite waitress dropped in to visit us. She said she would but we never really thought she would. We have a great visit and she brought me a neat get well card. She said she almost came tomorrow and brought Tex Mex but she thought it wouldn't keep very well overnight. She was happy to hear we would be there to eat and see her tonight. She has a cute little 4 year old daughter.

First Day of School

The little neighbor girl is only 3 years old and she started in Headstart this morning. The little yellow bus drove up and she got on and cried and cried. They had quite a time getting her settled before the driver could take them all to school. I bet when she got there she loved it. Shopping

You know we just take shopping for granted. It is an easy task really but when you are using a walker or crutches, it is a whole new ball game. My husband doesn't want to take me along as I am too slow. However, he can never find anything and I am afraid he is going to come home with the wrong foods. He does pretty good on the basics but since our grocery store expanded, there are so many kinds of breads, it is hard to find the one you are used to. I told him to ask the clerks and they are very helpful. I am glad he can do some of the shopping by himself.

Funeral Visitations

We went very early to a visitation of a young man, age 53, who grew up near us on the farm. The family is very dear to us and his parents are taking his death extremely hard. A New Van

My brother got a 2007 Freestar Ford van and it is the most beautiful shade of maroon red. He sent some pictures on the Internet and I am anxious to have a ride in it. It will be awhile though before I can crawl into it. I am so short. He said he would bring a little stool to step on to get into it. When he comes, he is going to bring some homemade pie too and he makes very good pie.

Redecorating

Global Warming or Global Cooling?

It is almost the end of July and it is about 60 degrees today. Brrrr, it is cold. I have all the windows open a little and the Northwest wind is downright cold. It is supposed to get down to 49 tonight. It is great sleeping weather and sure saves on the air conditioning but it should be in the 80's. I saw on the news that Seattle and Washington and Oregon are suffering under abnormal heat. They don't have air conditioning there because normally they don't need it. Strange summer, this one.

Stormy Weather

Sounds like we could be in for some stormy weather. It is sure hot. I just turned the fan on the furnace to circulate some air. Taco Salads

Our brother and sister-in-law came to visit from Wisconsin this long weekend. We went many places and at one of the restaurants, they ordered taco salads. I had never seen them served in boat shaped-like dishes. They had broken up the taco shell the taco usually is in, and put it into the ingredients in the salad and mixed it in with the lettuce, olives, cheese,meat and all the fixings for taco salad. They were easily able to eat them with a fork and I am going to have to try that at home because it was so simple and so easy to eat and just looked delicious.

The Demise of the CD

Just about the time we got used to 8-tracks, they came out with cassettes. We no sooner got a big supply of our favorite cassettes when they came out with CD's and a cassette player became obsolete. Now I guess the CD is on it's way out and everything is DVD. Our record player is an antique but it really works good and the radio will tape records onto cassettes. However, that doesn't help much. We have an old radio that will play the cassettes and you can fill it with batteries and take it along but it's too much trouble anymore. Oh yes, and the good old VCR bit the dust too so I am hanging onto the ones I have until they quit. When does this all end?

Old Theater Restoration

Ou little town had a going theater back in the 40's. For many years after it shut down it was a pharmacy. Several pharmacists came and went and the last one built a new building on the edge of town, leaving the building empty. A committee in town got together and decided to strip the building down and see what was there. They found old paintings on the walls from the original theater. They gave tours during the last summer town celebration and it was quite interesting to see it. There is a lot of work to be done yet, but I think it will be real addition to the town for us to have a theater here again. The young people have little to do but sports and the bowling alley closed, so it will give them some entertainment, along with the older generation as well.

Local Fairs

This is the time of year when all the local fairs are going on. We used to go to a lot of them but time changes things. It gets harder and harder to walk what seems like miles and miles around a fair. Our local fair is this week and we may get down there one night. Will see how it goes. I think the weather is supposed to be good all weekend. I really hope so. All the 4H kids are having their County Fairs too and showing off their animals. We have friends who have kids attending those. Hope they win some Blue Ribbons.

Crops in Iowa

The corn and bean crops in north central Iowa look beautiful right now. They are at their peak. The corn is tasseling and we will be seeing the ears forming very soon. Looking out across the beautiful green bean fields is a real treat. The corn was about waist to shoulder high by the 4th of July. They always say it should be knee high by the 4th but it was way taller than that again this year. Now the farmers hope and pray there won't be any hail storms or bad wind storms to knock the corn down and make it hard to combine. Summer is going way too fast and it hasn't really been hot as it usually is. In fact, it has been downright cold many days. That doesn't help the crops grow.

Swing Sets and Slides

Our neighbors have a really nice swing set for their 4 kids and a slide. It is fun to watch the 3 year old climb up the slide backwards. Why is it kids like to climb up the slide as well as slide down it? I can remember doing the very same thing. I was keeping an eye on her though as she would climb up the slide and then stand on the top and I was hoping she wouldn't lose her balance and fall off. She didn't, fortunately. They all ride their bikes a lot and she has training wheels yet but she's out there with the older kids riding every day.

The Neighbor's Cats

The neighbors have two cats named Ely and LC. Funny names aren't they? They got them both from a shelter and they both needed good homes. They have an excellent loving family taking care of them now. LC is older and sleeps a lot but Ely is full of it. You have to watch him because when the weather isn't too hot or cold, he will make a dash for the outside. I am going to feed them and make sure their litter box is ok while the neighbors go on vacation. Ely spills his water sometimes but they make very little mess and are really good cats.

Colon Cancer Surgery

My husband had colon cancer surgery on April 29. It was a huge success. The tumor was very large and beginning to grow into the side of the colon. 4th of July

The 4th of July is almost upon us. That means the year is all down hill from here. The corn is blowing in the wind and the beans are really growing too. We are enjoying temperatures in the 70's instead of 90-100 and the humidity is way down. It is so nice to have the windows open and no clouds or rain in the forecast for several days now. Hope everyone has a fun day on the 4th. Have a family picnic or go see fireworks or something fun.

Double Grandparents Again!

One of our twin daughter and her husband are going to be double grandparents again around the first of December. They have twins themselves and 4 years ago both twins got married a week apart. Then 2 years later they both had their first child, one a boy and the other a girl. Now those twins and their mates are expecting their second child and you guessed it, both girls are due about the same time again. So in a very short time, their folks will have 4 grandchildren and we will have a total of 8 great grandchildren. Isn't that neat?

Uncle Neal is special to all my kids because he kind of grew up with them. I got married young and he was 3 years younger yet so he grew up with our family too. Our oldest boy has so many actions, faces, and mannerisms of his Uncle Neal that sometimes I call him Neal. Relatives are such an important part of every family.

Master's Degree

Our grandson, Josh, got his Master's Degree last week. He is the first in the family to get such a degree. Here is a picture of him and his family. They all had a good time touring New York City, Washington and Philadelphia while they were there with more of the family.

It is quite a sight to see the Statue of Liberty in person. My husband remembers it when his ship went by it leaving New York for Germany way back in l951. I think it something you would never ever forget.

We are very proud of Josh and all of our family and their families. Our family has really grown in nearly 59 years.

Have you ever been to Branson? It is a family place to go to. We love the shows there and we have gone with our bank a couple years ago. Acid Attack in Hong Kong

Terror Cell Suspects

Four men accused of belonging to an Islamic terror cell that plotted to attack U.S. targets in Germany announced during their trial on Tuesday that they are prepared to confess. Adem Yilmaz was the first to announce during the 15th day of the trial that he wanted to confer with his three co-defendants and then offer a confession. It could be two weeks before such confessions are given. The trial is not set to resume until june 23.

Hospitals

My husband has been in the hospital a week now after colon cancer surgery. He has a stomach ache all the time and hasn't been able to eat anything. Traffic

Isn't the traffic getting terrific everywhere. I think every person in every family now has a car and is out on the road. It has gotten so much more congested just in the last couple of years. Every thing today seems topsy turvy. The stock market is a mess. People are losing their life savings for retirement so quickly it is hard to imagine. Stocks dropped like rocks. Homes are being foreclosed because the people cannot pay their mortgages. Rain and Night Driving

I used to have an Aunt that traveled alot by car and she loved to drive. She said her favorite time to drive was at night in the rain. I would say that is my least favorite time to drive. Grandchildren

We are going to have 2 more grandchildren this year for Christmas. The girls are due almost the same day near Dec. 1. Our granddaughter and her husband have a little 17 month old daughter now. Our grandson and his wife have a little l7 month old son. And now they are both going to do it again. This will make our son-in-law and daughter double grandparents for the second time in 4 years. It is one for the books I think. Not only that but the grandson and granddaughter are twins and were married a week apart so they continue to do everything together it would appear. Such excitement.

Attack on Prison Convoy Kills Eight

Gunmen ambushed a prisoner transfer convoy in western Mexico, in the latest of a series of brazen drug-elated attacks. They killed eight officers in a failed attempt to free a high level cartel member. This was reported by police on Sunday. At least 20 assailants launched a running gun battle again the dwindling column of vehicles escorting nine prisoners as it raced between an airport and penitentiary in the Pacific coast state of Nayarit.
