Sadr Freezes Militia Activities

Radical Iraqi Shia cleric, Moqtada Sadr, says he is freezing the activities of his Mehdi Army militia for up to six months in order to re-organize it. He has also called on all its offices to co-operate with the security forces and exercise self-control. Analysts see the move as an attempt by him to regain control over his increasingly divided militia. The order was read out at a news conference in Karbala, where fighting on Tuesday killed more than 50 people. Police blamed the Mehdi Army for the violence, but it denied involvement.

Almost 60 people suspected of being trafficked off the Libyan coast have been rescued after being abandoned without supplies in a leaking boat. EU Will Retain Light Bulb Tariff

The European Commission has decided to retain import tariffs on Chinese made energy efficient light bulbs for up to another 12 months. The decision was made even though only one of Europe's four energy efficient light bulb producers, Germany's Osram, had called for more time to adjust. Palestinian Children Die in Blast

Three Palestinian children have been killed after an Israeli tank shell hit northern Gaza. Israel's military confirmed it launched an attack, saying it had targeted people setting up a rocket launcher. Doctors said two boys aged 10 and 12 died of shrapnel wounds. A 12 year old girl, who was critically injured in the blast, died also in the hospital. Jordanian Prison Head Dismissed

Jordanian authorities have sacked the head of a prison where inmates deliberately injured themselves during a recent visit by Human Rights Watch. More than 100 inmates hurt themselves with ceramic tiles in Sunday's protest. It is a gorgeous day today. The sun is shining. The rain is past. We got 3/4" of rain and all the flowers are watered again. The lawn is mowed and sure looks nice. Actor Dennis Weaver Honored

Most of us remember Dennis Weaver from "Gunsmoke" or his "McCloud" series. A new park that features fly-fishing, scenic trails and a huge bronze eagle was dedicated Saturday to the late actor, Dennis Weaver on 60 acres of land his wife donated to the town. He had moved to Ridgway in l988, building a home made up of recycled tires and cans on 175 acres along the Uncompahgre River. The centerpiece of the park opened in his name is a 2800 pound bronze eagle with a 21 ft. wingspan. The eagle is a sign of power. Weaver, died last year at the age of 81.

Soldiers Die in Uganda Road Crash

More than 70 people including 57 soldiers, have died when a truck overturned in east Uganda's mountains. The army says the soldiers and their families were being moved from the border with Kenya to their base when their truck hit a concrete barrier. The accident is one of Uganda's worst in recent history. There are 31 seriously injured soldiers now in nearby hospitals. One local official says the truck's brakes may have failed on an incline.

It's a Great Day!

It's a beautiful day today. The sun is shining and the rain has stopped for 2 days now. My hanging pots of flowers are all getting ready to bloom now. The lawn has really grown and my husband is out mowing it early before it gets way to hot. We got a new hummingbird feeder and someone told us in the store that they had bought one and the orioles come and drink out of it. Well, they were right. We saw the most beautiful oriole yesterday morning and night coming to drink and he stays for a long time. I called the next door neighbor so she could look out the window and see it as we have never had one this close up before. A pair of hummingbirds fed all day too the last couple of days so we are sure happy we bought this particular one because it has little perches inbetween the flowers where the birds drink and they can sit and drink or sit and rest. It is fun to see a hummingbird sitting because you would never guess that they ever stop.

It's Been a Great Day

It has been a great day for me to get some work done around the house. I vacuumed and cleaned the stairway carpet outside and vacuumed the inside of the car. It really needed it, bad. Then I cleaned the bathrooms and swifter dusted all the floors. I made a good lunch and a great pork chop supper with mashed potatoes and gravy and vegetables. We had fresh sliced tomatoes that the neighbor brought over. They are so good this time of the year. I also went out and filled up the finch feeder as the goldfinch are returning again. We haven't seen many for a couple of weeks. They are so beautiful and have such a pretty song. It's fun to feel like you have accomplished something for a change after working hard all week on the job.

Eye Surgeries

I know it amazing how they can operate on eyes now and fix them so you don't need glasses anymore. It is a little scary though as some people have ended up with blurred vision for life. Now my husband is going to undergo cataract surgery on both eyes. One will be just 5 days before his birthday and then they will wait 2-3 weeks to be sure his eye is properly healed before they do the other one. They showed us the tiny little new lense the will put in his eye. It is amazing how small it is. They make the tiniest little slit in the eye and vacuum out the cararact and take out the old lense and put in the new one. You end up with 20-20 vision but they recommend some sort of glasses, probably for reading. You have to be there 3 hours ahead of time, it takes 20 minutes for the surgery and wait an hour after before going home. Kind of a long time but well worth it. Right now he is restricted so that he can't drive at night until his eyes are fixed and this has been very upsetting and traumatic for him. It makes us both understand how older people feel when the take away their license and car keys.

At least 25 prisoners have died in Brazil after fellow inmates set fire to mattresses in a cell, police and local media report. Nine fossilized teeth found in Ethiopia are from a previously unknown species of great ape, according to Nature journal reports. The 10 million year old fossils belong to an animal that has been named Coroapithecus abyssinicus by the Ethiopian-Japanese team. This new species could be a direct ancestor of living African great apes, according to the researchers. The finds from the Afar rift, in eastern Ethiopia, raise questions on current theories of human evolution.

Executive Charged With Securities Fraud

The former chief financial officer of Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. was charged with eight counts of civil securities fraud for allegedly ignoring that the company was improperly accounting for backdated stock option awards. Big Dreams Day

Our church is having a Big Dreams Day tomorrow and right now it looks like it is going to be a washout. They have scheduled and signed up runners for a 5K run plus they are going to bus in about 150 kids, ages 5 through 12 and their folks. They are planning to set up play equipment and lots of fun games. There will be a big picnic lunch about 11:30 and it is to benefit our Traction Action kids. We have 4 busses that we bus kids in every Thursday night at the church. We are praying the rain will stop.

Rain

Boy, is it raining here. It has been raining all night and this morning it really started coming down hard. It looks like one of our rain spouts got some leaves or something in it again and it is washing away some of the flowers in the flower bed that we just planted. Every year we go through this, no matter how many times we climb the ladder and clean it out. It just washes the dirt downhill along with the plants. This is the last time I am going to try and plant anything there. I have had it! We have 2" of rain already and they are talking rain tomorrow.

South African leaders are putting no public pressure on Zimbabwe's President, Robert Mugabe, to solve his country's dire political and economic crises. After a two-day conference in Zambia's capital, Lusaka, delegates said only that they welcomed progress in talks between Zimbabwe's rival politicians. Rwanda's Former King Thinks of Returning

The man who ruled Rwanda until his overthrow in l959, King Kigeli Ndahindurwa V, says he wants to return home for the first time in 48 years. But in an interview with the BBC, he says he can only return if the Rwandan people are prepared to accept him as their constitutional monarch. Speaking in the United States, and now 72 years of age, he said he had discussed his idea with Rwanda's President Paul Kagame. The president told him he was willing to consult his government on the issue.

Japanese Nuclear Damage "Limited"

United Nations experts say earthquake damage to the world's largest nuclear power plant, in Japan, appears to be limited and less than expected. The station was hit by a 6.8 magnitude quake on July 16 that killed at least 10 people. There was found to have been a radioactive leak and it was shut down. Inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency warned there could be implications for the long term operation of the plant.

BBC Radiio Ordered Off Russian FM

The BBC's Russian language service will no longer be heard on Russian FM radio, after the country's media regulator ordered that it be removed. The broadcaster's last FM distribution partner in Russia, Bolshoye Radio, said it had been told to remove BBC content or risk being shut down. Two other Russian FM stations have dropped BBC programming recently. The BBC's Russian Service can still be heard online and on medium and short wave frequencies in Russia. The BBC will appeal against the decision.

Egypt Wedding Boat Sinks in Nile

A boat carrying hundreds of celebrating wedding guests has sunk in the River Nile south of the Egyptian capital of Cairo. The vessel, which was moored in the town of Beni Suef, tilted and went down as people sang and danced. Man were rescued after jumping into the Nile. Dozens of others were not immediately accounted for but police later said they thought all were safe. At least six people were injured and taken to the hospital.

Iraqi Bomb Death Toll Reaches 344

The governor of the Sinjar region of north-western Iraq has said 344 people died in Tuesday's multiple bomb attacks against the minority Yazidi community. He said another 400 people had been injured by the blasts and that he believed 70 others were still buried in the rubble of destroyed buildings. About 600 local residents had been made homeless, the governor added.

Athens Suburb Fire Under Control

Firefighters tackling a blaze in the northern suburbs of Athens say the flames have been brought under control and are no longer threatening homes. Four simultaneous forest fires broke out on Penteli mountain on Thursday and swept down into affluent suburbs some 12 miles from the city center. Dozens of homes were destroyed and at least 10 people were taken to the hospital with breathing problems. Officials say they suspect the fires were the work of arsonists.

Russia Restarts Cold War Patrols

Russia is resuming a Soviet-era practice of sending its bomber aircraft on long-range flights, according to President Vladimir Putin. Mr. Putin said the move to resume the flights permanently after a 15-year suspension was in response to security threats posed by other military powers. He said 14 bombers had taken off from Russian airfields early on Friday. The move came a week after Russian bombers flew within a few hundred miles of the US Pacific island of Guam.

Caribbean Storm Gathers Strength

Hurricane Dean has strengthened to a category three "major" storm, pounding the eastern Caribbean with winds in excess of 110 MPH. A strong earthquake hit Peru on Friday, striking panic into local people and rescuers still searching for survivors of Wednesday's devastating quake. At least 500 people were killed when Wednesday's quake wrecked parts of Peru's central coast. The hunt for survivors goes on and dead bodies are still being retrieved.

Rwanda Anger at Congo Rebel Move

Rwanda has criticized the Democratic Republic of Congo for halting military operations against Hutu rebels who fled there after the 1994 Rwandan genocide. A senior US senator has called for all toys being imported into the country from China to be inspected after a massive recall by toymaker Mattel. Dick Durbin accused China of having "lax safety standards" and said that toy firms should voluntarily allow third party inspectors to check goods. Hot, Muggy Day

Here we are, another hot muggy day that makes the corn grow and we shrink into the cool home, office or car to get away from it. The rain has been coming but probably not enough. Existing Home Sales Drop

For the fourth consecutive month, sales of existing homes fell in July, further evidence that housing troubles are far from over. Sales of existing homes dropped by 3.8 percent in June to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.75 million units. That is the slowest sales pace since November 2002 and the decline was about twice what had been expected. The median price of an existing home edged up t $230,100, 0.3 percent more than a year ago. The median is the point where half the homes sold for more and half for less.

Britain Plans Tougher Anti-terrorism Laws

Britain is planning to get tough new anti-terrorism laws. They feel the police need greater powers to hold and question terror suspects in increasingly complex and global plots. Prime Minister Brown was in office two days when a failed terror attack against London happened. Since September 11, 2001, there have been 15 failed terror attempted attacks in Britain. Brown said fighting al-Qaida inspired terrorism would last a generation. He said one option under consideration was extending the time that police can question terror suspects. Currently, suspects need to be charged or released within 28 days.

Apple's Third-Quarter Profits UP

Apple Inc's fiscal third-quarter profit soared more than 73 percent, fueled by demand for its Macintosh computers, the strength of its iPod media players and the sales of 270,000 iPhones in the first two day on the market. For the quarter ended June 30, Apple's profit rose to $818 million or 92 cents per share, up from $472 million, or 54 cents a share in the year-ago quarter. Analysts expected Apple to report earnings of 72 cents per share on sales of $5.28 billion while Apple itself had projected earnings of 66 cents per share on quarterly sales of $5.1 billion.

30 Year Mortgage Rates

The rates on 30 year mortgages remained unchanged this week as a flood of new economic data did not change the general views of financial markets about inflation. Freddie Mac reported that 30 year fixed rate mortgages averaged 6.73 percent this week, the same as last week. Grand Jury Does Not Indict Doctor

A grand jury refused to indict a doctor accused of murdering four seriously ill hospital patients with drug injections during the desperate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, closing the books on the only mercy killing case to emerge from the storm. Dr. Anna Pou acknowledged administering medication to the patients but insisted she did so only to relieve pain. She and two nurses were arrested last summer after the Attorney General concluded they gave lethal cocktails to four patients at the flooded-out, sweltering Memorial Medical Center after the storm.
