Wall Street - stocks vs Gold and Silver

Which is best?  Buying gold and silver or buying stocks.  The stock market has really soared.  It has helped many retirement plans recover from big losses.  Wall Street is very excited about all that is going on.  Every day you hear some Hollywood star, or retired Congressman talking about the value of buying gold.  Last night I heard that it was not so safe and you would be better off to get into the stock market.  He cited the example of one billionaire that bought a great deal of silver and now has lost so much money he is no longer a billionaire.  That does not sound good to me.  The average person doesn't know what to do.  They better get some very experienced advice before they do anything.
