LPGA - Sonenstam Wins 71st Even in Playoff

Annika Sorenstam won the Stanford International Pro-Am for her 71st LPGA Tour victory, beating Paula Creamer with a par on the first playoff hole. Both laid up at the par-5, l8th in the playoff, with Creamer facing a tricky downhill birdie putt from just off the fringe, and Sorenstam leaving herself a birdie try from almost the same spot where she missed the potential winner in regulation. Sorenstam won or the 16th time in 22 playoffs.

Cover Letters

When you begin looking for a new position, the first thing you do is get your resume up-to-date. It is important to list all your experience and qualifications in an orderly manner so that it is appealing to a prospective new employer. But nearly as important as the resume are the cover letters. Each resume must have a cover letter that catches the employers eye and makes them want to hire you over many others who may be applying for the job. Having worked in Human Resources and having gone through a great many resumes and cover letters, I know that they are important. A poor cover letter can turn you off to the prospective employee almost immediately. It would be a good idea to go to this website cover letters and view their sample cover letters. They will give you great ideas for writing a good cover letter that will grab the employer's attention immediately. Check them out and see for yourself.

Iraq Leader Calls for Arab Support

Iraq's prime minister appealed for support from his Arab neighbors, urging them to open embassies and forgive Iraqi debts as his government tries to crack down on Shiite militias in a crucial power struggle. The appeal came as leaders of the biggest militia - the Mahdi Army of cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, warned more violence would await. This even as they criticized the government for allegedly showing little interest in negotiating with them. The tension has been rising and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki flew to Kuwait for a meeting of Iraq's neighbors to discuss ways they can help Iraq's Shiite-led government as it confronts both Shiite militias and Sunni extremists including al-Qaida in Iraq. Al-Maliki said he will be looking for tangible support, including relief from Iraq's $67 billion foreign debt, most of it owed to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

Dow Jones Ends Up 43

Investors have apparently overcome their worries and Wall Street ended its second straight winning week with a moderate advance on Friday. After slumping early in the session in response to weak consumer confidence and a spike in oil prices, investors seemed to turn their attention to broader signs. This included the week's generally satisfactory earnings reports. This suggested that government efforts to steady the economy appear to be working. That shift in focus sent stocks up late in the day.

Dog inYard Signs

I am very happy to get this post because I love dogs and when I saw these neat dog in yard signs I knew I just had to have one. I ordered a chocolate brown sign to match my cedar shake home. They have grass green and cobalt blue signs too. And I was so surprised at how fast they shipped it to me with the brass screws to put it on my gate. It will be easy to attach and I am so happy to be able to alert people that there are dogs in the yard so they won't be surprised. The dogs are very friendly but not all people like dogs and some are afraid of them no matter what. And sometimes it is the people who scare the dogs. These beautiful signs let them know so they can wait for me to come to the door. This is a great company. They don't take credit cards, they trust you to pay them. Now, how many companies do you know that would do that? None that I know of. You can email, call or FAX them an order and they will ship your sign fast and expect your check in return fast. If you copy the order form on the website and send the money, they will ship your order before others. These signs are also a very good way to protect yourself in case of a lawsuit for a dog bite. These lawsuits seem to be happening more and more and your insurance rates can go way up or you could even be dropped. So protect yourself and your dogs and get one of these beautiful, easy to install signs. They will let you know by email when your sign is shipped and they will be looking forward to your cooperation in mailing them a check fast.

Katie Couric - CBS

CBS Corp. Chairman Leslie Moonves paid a surprise visit to the CBS newsroom Friday to support embattled anchor Katie Couric. He told CBS News employees that there are no plans for a change, today, tomorrow and in the future. If ratings continue to lag Couric's status will be reviewed but that won't happen until after the election. We have heard a lot on the news lately that she would be replaced but it doesn't sound like that is true.

Citigroup Cuts Value of Investments by $14 Billion

Citigroup's 9,000 job cuts and $14 billion in write-downs suggest that even if the worst of the credit market volatility is over, the industry is now in a conservative, cost cutting mode. The bank's write-downs, plus more than $3 billion in costs related to consumers' credit problems, led it to report a first quarter loss of $5.1 billion or $1.02 a share. I don't think we have seen the last of the layoffs yet. They seem to keep on coming.

Air Force Must Do More in War Efforts

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the Air Force is not doing enough to help in the Iraq and Afghanistan war effort. He complained that some military leaders are stuck in the old ways of doing business. He also said that getting the military services, largely the Air Force, to send more unmanned surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft to Iraq and Afghanistan has been like pulling teeth. He addressed officer students at the Air Force's Air University. He did praise the Air Force for its overall contributions but made a point of urging it to do more and to undertake new and creative ways of thinking about helping the war effort instead of focusing mainly on future threats. He also included a broad appeal to the entire military. The Army, Navy and Marine Corps have been expanding their fleets of drone aircraft.

President Bush Defends Free-trade Agreements

This year's North American summit had the perfect timing of an old jazz band for President Bush. It gave him a pulpit to defend the North American free trade zone against opposition from Democrats running for the White House. It also gave him a chance to push Congress to ratify free trade deals with Panama, South Korea, and Colombia amid rising anti-trade sentiment on Capitol Hill. He said he is a strong advocate for free trade. He met with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and Mexican President Felipe Calderon. This summit came at an opportune time to reaffirm the benefits of the trading arrangements between the three nations.

President Carter Meets With Hamas

Although he was advised not to, President Carter went ahead and met with Hamas on Monday. He said the Islamic group Hamas was willing to accept the Jewish state as a "neighbor next door". However, the militants did not match their upbeat words with concrete steps to halt violence. That is because they don't intend to. Their goal is to wipe Israel off the map and they won't be happy until they do. Hamas has repeatedly confounded observers with its conflicting messages. Actions on the ground such as seven rockets were fired on Israel from Hamas-ruled Gaza Monday, including one that wounded a 4 year old boy, contradicted the Islamic militant group's positive words about coexistence and a truce. I think President Carter wasted his time and the taxpayers money on a worthless trip.

Earth Day Today - Go Green

Are you doing everything you can to help preserve the Earth for the next generation? What are you doing to "Go Green". Are you recycling all those milk jugs and plastic coffee cans? There are so many things you can put in the recycle bin and it is amazing what they can make out of it. I have even seen beautiful shopping bags made out of used plastic bags from the grocery store. Now there is someone with imagination. If we all do our part, it will be easy to "Go Green".

Faith, Freedom, and Pope Benedict XVI

It is important to have faith in your life whether you are Catholic or Protestant. The Pope stressed that it is important in public life also. He spoke before many crowds of people while he was visiting the USA but no crowd quite as large as the one in Yankee Stadium. There were about 57,000 American Catholics who turned out to hear him. He spoke in regard to abortion as well, saying the most defenseless of all human beings is the unborn child in the mother's womb. The crowd applauded when he said this and he was right. He also told the crowd to use their freedom wisely. We are so blessed to live in such a free beautiful country.

Homeless Man Finds NYC Plans in Trash

A homeless man says he found two sets of blueprints for the 102 story skyscraper at the World Trade Center site, in the trash. They are investigating this discovery. The schematic documents for the Freedom Tower, under construction at ground zero, were marked "Secure Document - Confidential". They were dated Oct. 5, 2007 and contain plans for each floor, the thickness of the concrete-core wall, and the location of air ducts, elevators, electrical systems and support columns. Now this is downright scary, wouldn't you say? Michael Fleming told the newspaper he found the documents on top of a public trash can in downtown Manhattan, with written warnings on it to "Properly destroy if discarded". I hope they can find out who is responsible for this breach of security.

Palestinian Militants Kill two Israelis

Militants from the Gaza Strip slipped across the border and opened fire at a fuel depot in southern Israel on Wednesday, killing two Israeli civilians in a brazen daylight raid that threatened to set off heavy combat after a month long lull. Israel should have never given up the Gaza Strip. They knew this is just what would happen and the strip contained lovely greenhouses and homes and the Palestinians destroyed and leveled everything. They planned all along, as far as I think, to use it to fire weapons at Israel and attack Israel. The Road to Peace plan is a joke. This war has been going on for thousands of years and goes way back to Abraham and it won't end until Jesus returns and settles it and that could be sooner than anyone thinks.

Scientists Think California Faces a Strong Quake

California faces an almost certain risk of being rocked by a strong earthquake by 2037. This is according to scientists in their first statewide temblor forecast. New calculations reveal there is a 99.7 percent chance of a magnitude 6.7 quake or larger will strike in the next 30 years. The odds of such an event are higher in Southern California than Northern California, 97 percent versus 93 percent. They say it basically guarantees that is is going to happen. The l994 Northridge earthquake under Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley was magnitude 6.7. It killed 72 people and injured more than 9,000 and caused $25 billion in damage in the metropolitan area.

Delta, Northwest For Possible Merger Announcement

Delta and Northwest could announce a combination that would create the world's biggest airline, but pilot contract issues still loomed and there was no guarantee the deal would move ahead. Three people familiar with the talks discussed this on Sunday. The people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation, said officials were mobilizing for an announcement provided the boards of the two companies give final approval to a deal. This would be quite a merger. It will be interesting to see what happens. There has been quite a bit on the news about it this morning.

Gas Prices Set Record

Gas and diesel pump prices are going out of sight. We heard a week ago that many of those truckers who work on their own are dropping out because they just can't afford to fill their trucks. One guy on the news said it cost him $900 every other day to fill his semi. I can't even imagine it, can you? And we feel bad when we have to spend $35 or $40 for a partial tank of gasoline. These costs are being passed on down to the consumers through higher grocery prices too making it a double whammy for most people, especially hard on laborers with families to feed. Gas here tonight was $3.26 a gallon.

Mothers from Polygamous Sect Write Letter to Texas Governor

The mothers of children removed from a polygamous sect's ranch in West Texas after an abuse allegation, are appealing to Gov. Rick Perry for help. They are saying some of their children have become sick and even required hospitalization. In the letter, the mothers from the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints also say children are horrified by physical examinations they have undergone while in state custody. I'm not sure I would believe that statement. Those poor kids probably all needed medical attention from what we have heard of the treatment they received at that ranch.

Iraqi Government Dismisses 1,300 Soldiers, Policement

Iraq's government moved on Sunday to restore discipline within the ranks of the security forces, sacking more that 1300 soldiers and policemen who deserted during recent fighting against Shiite militias in Basra. Is it any wonder? What good are they if they take off when the fighting gets tough. At the same time, Iraq's Cabinet ratcheted up the pressure on anti-American Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr by approving draft legislation barring political parties with militias from participating in upcoming provincial elections. Sounds like a good idea to me. Al-Sadr, who heads the country's largest militia, the Mahdi Army, has been under intense pressure from Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, also a Shiite, to disband the Mahdi Army or face political isolation. Al-Sadr's followers are eager to take part in the local elections because they believe they can take power away from rival Shiite parties in the vast, oil rich Shiite heartland of southern Iraq.

Dalai Lama Speaks

The Dalai Lama said Sunday that Tibet cannot make any more concessions to China. He also renewed his calls for the government to cease suppression in his former homeland and withdraw troops. The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader denied Chinese claims that he has called for Tibet to be split from China. He also denied that he is behind recent turmoil, saying instead that he is committed to pursuing Tibet's right to autonomy. I'm not sure how I feel about the Dalai Lama. What are your ideas?

Lead Poisoning in Poor Neighborhoods

Scientists using federal grants spread fertilizer made from human and industrial wastes on yards in poor, black neighborhoods to test whether it might protect children from lead poisoning in the soil. Families were assured the sludge was safe and were never told about an harmful ingredients. Nine low-income families in Baltimore row houses agreed to let researchers till the sewage sludge into their yards and plant new grass. In exchange, they were given food coupons as well as the free lawns as part of a study published in 2005 and funded by HUD. No one involved in the $446,231 grant for the two year study would identify the participants, citing privacy concerns. There is no evidence there was ever any medical follow-up. Don't you think that is strange?

Texas Compound Children

The State of Texas is going to maintain custody of 416 children from a Texas compound. Many of you have probably seen this on the news. Young teenage girls at a polygamist compound in West Texas were required to have sex in a soaring white temple after they were married in sect-recognized unions. The Temple was found to contain an area where males over the age of 17 could engage in sexual activity with female children under the age of 17. What a sick outfit. I am glad they found this out and are putting a stop to it. Multiple marriages were common to very young girls. This world is a sick place.

American Airlines Strands 100,000 Customers

American Airlines stranded so many people over wiring issues. Thousands of people were exasperated and upset by the cancellation of those flights and the loudest complaints came from the airline's own employees. The pilots union took out full-page newspaper ads criticizing the carrier. Flight attendants have renewed a campaign against stock bonuses for top executives. American canceled 595 flights on Friday, bringing the running total to about 3,080 and said more flights would be canceled Saturday.

Tiger Woods, Phil, or Who?

Those are the basic choices given for this year's Masters champion, or maybe even for the rest of this decade. Ernie Els did break through with a win at the Honda, after a struggle for most of the past two years. But he's also going through swing changes with new coach Butch Harmon. Another contender who has not yet put on the green jacket is Retief Goosen. Just think, Tiger Woods would pass Arnold Palmer by winning a fifth green jacket, putting him one behind Jack Nicklaus. It would also break a tie with Ben Hogan for third on the PGA Tour carrier victories list with his 65th. Only Nicklaus (73) and Sam Snead (82) lie ahead. Woods hasn't won at Augusta since 2005. He tied for third in 2006 when Mickelson won and tied for second behind Zach Johnson last year. His perfect season came to an end at the World Golf Championships CA Championship at Doral last month when he finished fifth. He has won his last five tournaments. Go Tiger!

Target Earnings Drops 8 Percent for Quarter

In a slowing economy, the more upscale the retailer, it seems, the more they are struggling. Department store operator Macy's needed a one-time tax benefit to rescue the fourth quarter results it released. Cheap-chic Target did better, with an 8 percent drop in quarterly earnings that was still a little higher than analysts expected. And Wal-Mart, with its strong emphasis on low prices, reported a solid fourth quarter last week. Other examples were Nordstrom whose profits declined 8.6 percent, while discounter TJX Company said last week that its fourth quarter earning rose almost 47 percent.

Ford Recalls 470,000 Mustangs Over Air Bags

Doesn't it seem like something is being recalled almost every day or every week? Don't We make anything right in the United States anymore and don't they check the stuff coming in the United States well enough? Ford Motor Co. said it is recalling 470,000 Ford Mustangs from the 2005-2008 model years to recalibrate how forceful the air bag deploys on the front passenger side of the car.Now THAT is a lot of cars!! Their spokesman said internal testing showed the air bag could injure a small, unbelted passenger. The recall was posted on the Web site of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There were no reports of injuries or accidents tied to the recall. I am glad of that. Owners can take their vehicles to a dealer to have the air bad recalibrated to deploy at a lower force. Actually, I am very short and would probably be seriously injured as much as a child by one of these air bags. It is scary in other vehicles too for children and small adults.

Honda Ends U.S. Motorcycle Production

Honda Motor Co. plans to stop making motorcycles in the United States next year and transfer the work to Japan, thus pulling the plug on its first U. S. Plant. I hate to hear of any company transferring to another country because it is bad for the United States. Their Marysville, Ohio plant, built in 1979, turns out the large Gold Wing touring and VTX cruiser motorcycles. The work will be shifted to a plant in Japan that can produce bikes more efficiently. What does that say for us in this country? It is not good. The Ohio plant employs 450 workers. At least Honda said there will be no layoffs when production ends in spring 2009 because emploees will remain with the company. They will help produce cars, trucks, engines and parts and fill other jobs at Honda's operations in west-central Ohio. Thanks heavens for that. I would hate to see another 450 people out of work.

World's Tallest Man Limited by Troubles

How would you like to be the world's tallest man? Not me, that's for sure. Leonid Stadnik's phenomenal height has forced him to quit a job he loved, to stoop as he loves around his house and to spend most of his time in his tiny home village because he cannot fit in a car or bus. According to the Guinness World Records he is the world's tallest human. In 2006 he was officially measured at 8 feet, 5 inches, surpassing a Chinese man to claim the title. He has found through his unusual height that there are a great many good hearted people. He said thanks to them, he has shoes and clothes. He is 37 years old and a former veterinarian and still lives with his 66 year old mother.

Cemetery Headstones and Markers

Are you a person who loves the upright headstones in cemeteries? Or are you one who likes the flat monuments at ground level. I always thought cemeteries with big headstones were kind of depressing. Then they came out with cemeteries with the plate like markers and I liked that much better. We looked at pictures of all the different kinds and there are so many designs you can have put on them it is hard to choose which one you like best. We will go tomorrow to see the sketch of the one we picked out. I was told that it looks very nice.

Weather Changes

In this State they say if you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes or a day. And it happened again. It was raining cats and dogs yesterday and the grass even looks a bit green. Today the whole world is white again and it is snowing. It is nature's April Fools joke and the joke is on us. At least it is Spring now and it will melt away quite fast if the sun would just come out. March went out like a Lion and it came in like a Lion. What happened to the Lamb? Instead we got this April Fool snow.
