More Higher Gas Prices?

Oil futures spiked above $70 a barrel on Thursday for the first time since September 1 on a government report that showed gasoline inventories dropped unexpectedly as the summer driving season neared its peak. We noticed gas went up right away in our small town and we thought at first the Holiday 4th of July coming up was to blame. But then we heard about the price per barrel rise. This broke a monthlong decline and held steady overnight with a national average of $2.975 a gallon. It is $2.959 here where we live. You just can't stay home and hibernate so you pay the going price whether you like it or not.

Economy Limps Along

The economy limped ahead at just a 0.7 percent in the first quarter. This is the slowest in four years. Some businesses clamped down on spending due to the uncertainties about the severity of the housing slump. The Commerce Department's new reading on gross domestic product for the January through Maarch period, was a slight upgrade from the 0.6 percent growth rate estimated a month ago. But it did fall short of economists' forecasts for a 0.8 percent pace and may turn out to be the weakest point for the economy this year.

New Study Of Clot Busting Drugs

They have found that an anti-clotting drug used to treat strokes and heart attacks can also restore blood flow to frostbitten fingers and limbs, greatly reducing the need for amputation. Doctors at the University of Utah who conducted the research on a small sample of patients hope it marks the start of a move beyond the traditional and limited treatment for frostbite. It does help to rescue the tissue that is damaged but not yet dead. Patients who received the thrombolytic theraphy at the university's burn center were more likely to keep their frostbitten fingers and toes than patients who went without the drug. All patients had similar degrees of frostbite. This will be interesting to follow and I hope it works for everyone.

There has been alot of uncertainty as to whether LeBron James would play on the U.S. National team. He did say Tuesday night, however that he will play in next month's FIBA America's Tournament where the Americans will try to qualify for the 2008 Olympics. He had said for several months that he was 50-50 about playing for Team USA this summer. He and his girlfriend recently had their second son and with the Cavaliers making it to the NBA finals, he may have wanted some extra time off after playing more than 100 games since last October.

New York's Mount Sinai Shool of Medicine is heading up a study. They plan to recruit 600 people over the age of 75 to help test in-home "kiosks". They will turn on automaically to administer monthly cognitive exams. It will be a video of a smiling scientist who appears on-screen to talk participants through such classic tests as reading a string of words and then, repeating how many they recall, or seeing how quickly they complete connect-the-dot patterns. They did this in Oregon. It was a pilot study of the motion sensors which tracked 14 partipants in their upper 80's for almost a year. They found half had mild cognitive impairment, an Alzheimer's precursor, and half were healthy. The National Institutes of Health received a grant to study 300 homes and 112 are being monitored already.

Rosie O'Donnell On The Price Is Right?

Do you think we will ever see Rosie O'Donnell replace Bob Barker on The Price Is Right?
Frankly, I hope not. I think she is obnoxious and a loud mouth and it would be an insult to Bob Barker to put her in the job. But to my surprise Bob Barker seems to like her and told reporters that he had "no doubt" that she would make a fine host for the CBS game show. He retired this month after 35 years with the show. The producers have yet to announce Barker's successor. Among those reportedly in the running are Todd Newton of the E! network, Mark Steines of "Entertainment Tonight" Geore Hamilton and John O'Hurley and of course, O'Donnell.

Sand More Deadly Than Sharks

When you are at the beach, waves and sharks aren't the only dangers. Sand holes have collapsed on more than two dozen young people and killed them over the last decade. Father and son doctors have made warning of this risk their personal campaign. At least 20 children and young adults in the United States have died since 1985 at the beach or backyard sand submersions. There were at least 8 others who died in Australia New Zealand and the United Kingdom. This was published in this week's issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. A sand hole can collapse horrifyingly fast.

Easter Eggs

When I think of Easter Eggs, I think of Cadbury. It seems like everone has eaten one of their Cadbury Easter eggs. But this company also owns the U.S.unit that makes 7-up, Dr. Pepper and Snapple soft drinks. Cadbury Schweppes PLC is planning to close 15 percent of its candy factories by 2011. This will cut about 7,500 jobs and will likely sell the U.S. unit that makes the soft drinks mentioned above. The company had announced it planned to separate its drinks and candy businesses. Anna Nicole Smith's Judge

The wisecracking judge in the Anna Nicole Smith dispute over her remains, will resign next month according to a court spokesman. The judge, Larry Seidlin gave no specifics on his plans for the future. For months though, rumors have been rampant that he is considering a deal for a television show. I think the way he acted, he was trying out like a screen test in advance. Actually, I thought he was kind of funny myself. He'll probably get that kind of job.

According to official figures, the number of new U. S. homes built in May fell more than expected. The number built dropped by 2.1% in May after rising 1% in April. Consumer Prices Surge

At the fastest pace in 20 months, consumer prices rose in May. This was fueled by another big rise for gas and also, an increase in food prices, as well. However, prices for cars, airline tickets, clothes, and computers all fell. An increase of 0.7 percent was posted by the Consumer Price Index. This was the biggest one month gain since the fall of 2005 after Hurricane Katrina shut down Gulf Coast oil production and energy prices surged. If you exclude food and energy, the increase for so-called inflation was just 0.1 percent,

Khmer Rouge Trials To Start

The Khmer Rouge Trials in Cambodia are ready to start. A panel of judges has approved the ground rules. After a delay of more than six months, the deal was reached in a week long meeting. The delay was caused by disagreements between local and UN-appointed legal officials. Trials will start in 2008, but the tribunal is expected to last for three years before the trials. No one has ever faced charges for as many as two million who were thought to have died during the four years of Khmer Rouge rule in the late 1970's.

E U 's Carbon Trade Set To Fail

Tackling the climate change is set to fail again because the EU's carbon trading scheme, which was launched in 2005 is having limited success, partly due to tax limits. Also worried is the wild life charity. Failure to cut carbon dioxide levels could cause irreversibly damaging climate change, according to fearful scientists. It sounded good at first, but the first phase, which covered 40% of the EU's emmissions has fallen short.

Yahoo CEO on The Hot Seat

Yahoo's Chairman, Terry Semel, had assured securities analysts and money managers that his company would remain the internet's brightest star. That was just before Google Inc. went public nearly three years ago. Since then Google has so nearly eclipsed its rival, that a growing number of Yahoo shareholders believes the company would be better off without Semel. There are about 80 Yahoo stockholders who own a combined 2 million shares in the company. Semel could very well face a chorus of discontent when he takes the stage at Yahoo's annual shareholders meeting today.

Suppertime

Our supper just arrived and it is a huge bowl of wonderful looking and smelling stew. There is alot of beef pieces, potatoes, carrots, tiny onions in a marvelous gravylike juice. It was supposed to be for tomorrow night as the lady who brought it is leaving on vacation in the morning. She also brought some tasty crescent rolls to go along with it. The aroma was so overwhelming and tempting that we decided to have it tonight and it met with all of our expectations. With fresh radishes from the garden and polished off with a dish of sweet sliced peaches, it was a meal fit for a king.

Consumer Spending

Although Americans shopped rather hesitantly in May, retailers got some relief from the dismal showing in April. Retailers are still raising questions about how strong consumer spending will be in the months ahead. It is clear that higher gas prices and the slumping housing market are affecting how consumers spend. In a cross-section of the industry, sales were disappointing. This included Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Macy's Inc., and Abercrombie & Fitch Co.

Stocks Stumble

Thursday,Wall Street fell sharply for the third straight session. Rising bond yields deflated hopes for an interest rate cut later in the year. The S&P 500 index fell below the 1500 mark and the Dow Jones industrials fell nearly 200 points. I am sure everyone got nervous. The Treasury's 10-year note yield passed 5 percent Thursday and closed 5.13 percent, its highest point since mid-July. This move unnerved investors who contend that the Federal Reserve will be less inclined to cut short-term interest rates.

Neat Story

A veteran lost his watch nearly 90 years ago, during World War I. He lost the watch in France where he was serving inthe Army. Another man won it in a poker game and brought it back to South Dakota. Because it had an engraving on the back, he searched to no avail to find the owner. After he died, his son enlisted the aid of a genealogist. In April, she located the veteran's grandson in Springfield, Missouri. The grandson and his brother reclaimed the watch Wednesday at the American Legion Post 1981 in Sioux City, Iowa. Their grandfather had died in 1962. Words could not express how they felt to hold their grandfather's watch in their hands. Neat story, huh and a true one.

The US appears to have rejected draft proposals by Germany for G8 members to agree to tough measures in greenhouse gas emissions, leaked documents have shown. Wide-ranging US amendments to a draft communique prepared ahead of June's G8 in the Germany summit, cite a "fundamental opposition" to the proposals. Germany wants all G8 members to agree to timetables and targets for major cuts. The document was leaked by Greenpeace. It showed UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair, failed to persuade the US to alter its stance.

Australia Pledges Climate Plan

The Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, has announced a shift in policy on climate change. He is promising to set up a carbon trading scheme to cut pollution. He would set a target next year for limiting greenhouse gas emissions and also pledged to putin place a carbon trading scheme by 2012. Per head of population in the world, Australia is one of the worst polluters. He has warned, however, that setting a cap on carbon emissions would hurt the economy. The opposition Labor party has a strong lead in the opinion polls in the upcoming national election later this year. They have portrayed the government as dithering and backward-looking on global warming. Labor has pledged to cut greenhouse emissions by 60% by 2050. Mr. Howard told an annual meeting of his Liberal Party that if they get this wrong, it will do enormous damage to the economy, to jobs and to the economic well-being of ordinary Australians, especially low-income households.

Putin Warns Europe in Missile Row

Moscow may target weapons at Europe if the US builds planned missile defence facilities in the region said Russian President Putin. Since the end of the Cold War, Russia has not pointed missiles towards Europe. The US wants to expand its missile defences into eastern Europe. It says the system is not aimed at Russia but Moscow says its security is threatened.Putin repeated warnings that the US defence shield could lead to a new arms race but said it would be the fault of the Americans if this happened. The US has altered the strategic balance, he said, by unilaterally pulling out of the anti-ballistic missile treaty in 2002.

Fighting in Lebanon Camp

Fighting broke out between soldiers and Islamist militants at a second Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon according to security officers. It is said to involve Jund al-Sham militants in the violence in the Ain al-Hilweh camp near the southern city of Sidon. When suspected militants fired a grenade at an army checkpoint, a soldier and a civilian were injured. It's not clear if the biolence is linked to the fighting at the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp in the north. Army troops at the Ain al-Hilweh camp responded to the rocket propelled grenade attack with gunfire. Fighting between the militants and the army began at the camp near Tripoli in northern Lebanon two weeks ago. It is reported that more than 100 civilians, soldiers and militants have died since then.

Capella University

Today, Capella University announced a new Bachelor of Science in Public safety program. They have also added 8 new graduate and undergraduate specializations that you can learn about by checking out their website online. There is a real need for a leadership specialization focused on special education. I know that special education is growing by leaps and bounds in our community and it is a small town. Teachers are in demand and must have this special training. Pamela Potter, president of the National association of Pupil Services Administrators, basically said the present program was inadequate. Capella is leading the way to a more effective and efficient way to prepare for a job in special education. Headstart in most communities has tried to fill the gap for special ed students but it was not enough. Our school added an entire new department with more teachers. I am sure they could all take advantage of the training that Capella offers.

Gates sees Positive Signs

U. S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, despite a rise in insurgent violence this spring, said he is convinced that American and NATO forces are making steady progress against the Taliban in Afghanistan. Gates told reporters that he actually thinks things are slowly, cautiously headed in the right direction. But he is concerned to keep it moving that way. He spoke during a flight to the Afghan capital from singapore, where he attended a security conference.

Pornography

Do you realize that pornography has become a part of our every day Life?It used to be relegated to a video hidden in the bottom drawer, or a magazine under the mattress. Today it is everywhere. On TV you see Hugh Hefner parading his "girlfriends" across the screen and they have almost become the "girls next door". There are porn stars that have MySpace pages and do voiceovers on video games. You put a simple word into your search and end up with porn rather than what you were looking for. In april, more than a third of the U.S. Internet audience visited sites that fit into the online "adult" category. Pron has made sexiness go from subtle to raunchy. It's sickening.

He was in a coma for 19 years in Warsaw, Poland. In l988, he sustained a head injury and went into a comma. In addition to that, doctors found cancer in his brain and said he would not live. His wife took him home and cared for him the entire time. She fought against euthanazia as alot thought they should just put him out of his misery. but she wouldn't hear of it and took very good care of him and for 19 years he didn't move or say anything. He tried to talk but they couldn't understand him and just pretended to him, that they knew what he was saying. Last October he got pneumonia and they think the doctor's efforts to cure him of that may have helped his recovery. He is talking now and thinks the world is much prettier than when he last saw it. what a miracle!!!

China's Economy Will Become Biggest

A century ago, Britain was the economic superpower but it slipped into second class status, in part because it was bled by the cost of wars. There is no law of nature that says the same can't happen to the United States. Sometime in this century, China will become the world's largest economy. It could then be in a position to call the tunes that the United states now calls. American self-indulgence has put this country in a position to become subservient. We haven't been paying our bills, so we became a debtor nation and much of that debt is held by China. This is a scary situation when you think about it. We should be a lending nation, not a debtor nation. China, a developing country should be a borrower, not a lender. The roles have been reversed. Being deep in debt to China does not bode well for the US remaining master of its own destiny. Nor does the war in Iraq. Not even a country as rich as the United states can sustain the estimated $1 trillion drain on its economy from the war.

China

Hot Dog!

They had a hot dog eating contest in Phoenix, AZ and a California man won in twelve minutes. He smashed the world record for hotdog eating by gobbling up more than 59 franks in 12 minutes. It was Joey Chestnut, age 23, of San Jose, who shattered the record held by Takeru Kobayashi (easy for them to say) of Japan. He downed 59 1/2 hot dogs and buns at the southwest regional Hot Dog Eating champsionship at the Arizona Mills Mall in suburban Tempe. The old record was 53 1/2 set last year at a contest held at coney Island in New York. Pepto Bismol anyone???

TV Kidney Competition Was A Hoax

A Dutch TV contest which purported to show a dying woman choose a patient to receive her kidneys was a hoax. The "donor" in the show was in fact, an actress. However, the three people vying for an organ were real patients in need of a kidney transplant. These three people did know that The Big donor Show was not real. It was made to highlight the shortage of Dutch donors. The show had atracted widespread criticism before the hoax was revealed.Presenter Patrick Lodiers said "We are not giving away a kidney here, that is going too far even for us," just at the moment when the fake donor was apparently about to reveal her choice of patient. It sounds to me like the whole thing was in bad taste, don't you think so too?

He also added that Mr. castro was reading and writing alot. The Cuban leader has not been seen in public since undergoing intestinal surgery in July 2006 and has temporarily ceded power to his brother, Raul. Mr. Alarcon told the CNN netwodk he thought, in a way, he has practically fully recovered. The problem was a very delicate surgery and he had to have several surgeries, but it was a very risky situation. But it's not anymore.

Blue Moon

Just how often have you heard the expression "once in a blue moon"? Thursday we had our "blue moon". It is the 2nd full moon within the same month. The moon doesn't really turn blue but it has been known to look bluish in appearance when smoke and dust particles from forest fires or a volcanic eruption have tainted the atmosphere. There are two full moons in a single month twice in one calendar year. The last time was in l999 when there were two full moons in January and March and none in february. the next double blue moon year will be 2018.Each full moon inspired American Indians to come up with a name. According to the Farmers almanac, the moons were named (from January to December) : wolf moon, snow, worm, pink, lower, strawberry, buck, sturgeon, harvest, hunter's, beaver and full cold moon. Interesting, huh?

Air Hostesses Told To Shed weight

In Indian court has ruled against a group of female flight attendants who were grounded from the national airline for being overweight.the airline started a system of measuring air hostesses based on their heiht and weight last year. The court said that the state-owned Indiana airlines had the right to take the step in the interest of flight safety and in the face of growing competition. The flight attendants had argued that the move was demeaning. The Justice said that no airline could afford to remain lax in any department whatsoever, be it the personality of the crew members or their physical fitness.

TB Man Sorry

A U.S. tuberculosis patient said he is sorry and apologised to passengers he may have endangered by boarding two transatlantic flights. He flew to Europe for his wedding last month, knowing he had TB but said he did not know he posed a risk. Even the health officials had told him he was not contagious. They had not forbidden him to travel but they should have. He wore a mask while speaking with ABC's Good Morning America program and said he hoped his fellow passengers could understand and forgive him because he really believed that he wasn't putting anyone at risk. He is now under quarantine. His wife does not seem worried, but maybe just a little bit she said. I would be worried if I was her as it is a strain that is resistant to drugs. They are giving him several antibiotics.

Dutch TV Station Program

A Dutch TV station says it will go ahead with a program in which a terminally ill woman selects one of three patients to receive her kidneys. "It's a crazy idea," said Joop Atsma, of the ruling Christian Democrat Party and I have to agree with him. Have you ever heard of such a thing? The broadcaster says it will highlight the country's shortage of organ donors. I know there is a shortage almost everywhere but this takes the cake. Even the Dutch donor authority has condemned the show, as well as, kidney specialists in the UK. I don't think it would go over here in the United States either.
