Christmas Dinner

We had our family Christmas today and we had so much fun. Everyone brought their favorite dishes and we had a terrific assortment of main dishes, homemade soup and rolls and delicious salads and desserts. I made my Mexican Lasagna and baked beans and they went over very well. I also made 2 pies, one raisin and one big pumpkin pie and all that came home with us was 2 pieces of pumpkin pie and a little lasagna which will taste awful good for supper tomorrow night. We played a game of exchanging gifts and had a good time with the little great grandchildren too. The little one year olds are walking now and that is so cute.

Holly's Christmas

Holly, our little Boston Terrier, enjoy a few extra dog treats over the last few days. She sniffs at the Christmas decorations that are on the floor but she doesn't bother them. She knows things are different but I don't think she can figure out what. She will just go about her daily work of sleeping in her favorite chairs until its time to eat again. She loves to have half a piece of cheese every day for lunch. I give it to her in bits so it lasts longer. The Vet said it is good for her stomach.

Lunar Eclipse

Did you get to see the lunar eclipse. I did not get to see it but it was on television this morning and I also watched the video on Facebook. That was pretty neat. Quick Supper

I have been so busy on the computer today that I needed to be able to serve a hot and quick supper. So we had beef stew and garlic bread for supper. It was simple and easy and filling. We always have some sort of fruit for dessert and tonight we had peaches. My husband grew up having peaches most of his life and never tires of them. I like to have pears and fruit cocktail once in a while too and also applesauce. It's good to have a variety.

Ava Marie is Here

We have been waiting a long time for little Ava Marie to come into the world. She arrived last night about 8:30 and made her parents very happy. This is their first child and girls are scarce in our family so that makes her all the more special. I came from a family that was all boys for generations except for one Aunt and then I came along and got the royal treatment, especially on birthdays and Christmas. That was pretty nice. Ava is our 10th great granddaughter that so that makes her special also.

Grammy and the Grandkids

This Grammy is really enjoying her grandchildren. Not only that, but they enjoy her too. They love having Grammy and Grandpa come over and they love going to their house. New Toys

Christmas Brunch

My neighbor called the other day and invited me to a Christmas Brunch. It is going to be tomorrow morning at their church. They are going to have a Christmas tea first. Christmas Decorations

It was time to do the Christmas decorating so we got down our storage boxes. I have gotten rid of a lot of things but saved special items. We downsized our house so we just didn't need all the things I had purchased at a great many craft shows. Now I am using things my children made or items that mean a lot that were given to us. Our Christmas bears always bring back happy memories of a sister-in-law that is no longer with us because of cancer. I have a lighted wreath in the window that was made in the 1970's by a man who has passed away now for many years and it still works. I like the multicolor lights. They seem more like Christmas than the white ones.

Cold Rain

BRRRR We are having cold rain now and it will get colder as the day goes on. It is supposed to turn to snow later and into tomorrow. We are supposed to get some more high winds with it too. I know the rain will freeze again and I hate it when everything gets so slippery. I went to the store and got two bags of ice melt so we are ready for it. Just got the driveway cleaned off and now it is starting in again. It is so dark and dreary today you need a lamp on to enjoy yourself. You can't sit down to read anything without some light.

Two Thanksgivings

We have a lot to be thankful for and another one of those things is that we are invited to two Thanksgiving dinners this year. Tomorrow is the first one, of course and the other will be on Saturday. We will get to see lots of our grandchildren this way and that is pretty neat. Saturday we will be seeing four little great grandchildren and that is always special too. Looking forward to lots of good food and fellowship with our family.

Grammy Love

There is nothing like Grammy's love. It is fun having your own children but I think grandchildren are more fun. I know one of the reasons is that you don't have them 24/7 and have all the work and responsibility that goes along with your own children. That is what makes it so much fun to get together with your grandchildren. You always have a good time and they are so happy to see you.

First Snows

Well we had our first little snows this weekend. It really came down in huge snowflakes and actually looks pretty. However, as winter goes on and it comes in blizzards, it isn't so pretty anymore. The older you get, the more you hate to see winter come with its ice and snow. The kids just love it and will make snowballs out of any amount that falls. We had quite a little coming down yesterday but then the temperatures got warmer and melted it off of everything including the roof tops. That's enough snow for now. Hope we don't get anymore this month.

Our little great granddaughter had a wonderful birthday. She is now 3 years old. It is so hard to believe they grow up so fast. She is having a great time here eating some of her birthday cake. Great Grandson has Birthday

Feeding Time

It is feeding time for the grandkids and Grandpa is very busy keeping up. They are hungry and he is doing a good job of feeding them. We are in for another wild and windy day today. Winds were sustained yesterday at about 26 mph but today they could be even stronger. They can do a lot of damage when they get that strong. Fun at the Fair

Our grandchildren took their little ones to the Fair and they had a great time. There was a petting zoo which they enjoyed. Holly's Visit to the Vet

Our little dog, Holly, loves to come in here and sleep by me and my computer. She is getting older now and can she snore! She gets so loud in the living room, she will almost drown out the TV. My husband will holler at her to wake her up. It's kind of funny. She can go to sleep anywhere and she owns the house so she has several chairs she sleeps in and a pillow on the floor. Her favorite place seems to be behind our rocking chair.

Homemade Pea Soup

When I got home from town this morning, I made a big batch of homemade whole pea soup. I had soaked the dried peas overnight so they were ready to cook. I just needed to put them in a big pan and start them boiling. After a bit, I added half a teaspoon of soda and it causes the peas to break out of their skins but you have to watch so it doesn't boil over. Then when they have cooked a bit, I added a diced potato and a spoonful of beef bullion to the pot. When the peas were well cooked, I added diced carrots and the broth and container of stir fry beef I had cooked the day before. I cook the beef in my pressure cooker so it is very tender. That is going to be our supper tonight along with salad and crescent rolls. Yum!

Elections

Well the elections are finally over. We have a new Governor in our State. Actually he was Governor once before so we know him quite well. When he was Governor there was a surplus in the coffers of the State and it didn't take the next Governor long to spend that and much much more putting the State in debt. We even had to cut back on Highway Patrolmen which we thought was one of the worst things they could do. We don't have enough of the now. I hope the change will be a good change. I guess we will have to wait and see.

New Home on the Farm

Here is a picture of part of the yard on the acreage where our Grandson and his family have moved. It is a great place to raise kids. They will have plenty of room to play inside and outside. It gives them a chance to get out of their apartment and out into the world and play in the sunshine and also in the snow this winter. They have a beautiful place to grow up. We were on an acreage for 21 years with our children and I know it was good for them.

I read on the Internet that 90% of them do not work. So what is a person to do? I know I have always heard that you lose a great deal of water weight at first and then it comes right back on. Brotherly Love

That's what the world is all about isn't it? We need more brotherly love all over and here is a great example of my great grandchildren displaying such love for each other. They have so much fun together already and once the little one gets to really walking all over, they will have even more fun. Dental Visit

We were so proud of our little great granddaughter when she made her first trip to the dentist. She is not quite three years old and most children that age do not do well on their first trip to the dentist. Her Grammy works at the dentist where she went so she prepared her grandchild in advance of what would be going on during her dental visit. I am sure that really helped her not to be afraid and she sat very well to have her teeth cleaned and polished. I think she did better than many adults who are afraid to go to the dentist.

Medical Computer Carts

The last time I was in the hospital I noticed they were using something new to me. It appeared to be medical computer carts. I am sure this is a great way to enhance the care of the patient. After the nurse sees the patient and administers everything she has for them, everything is recorded on a computer on a rolling cart that can be taken easily from room to room. All their work was done in the hall out of sight of the patient in the room, but when the patient is walking around she can see the person busily at work on her computer cart. This simply has to ease the busy routines of the hospital staff. I am sure they order the carts with the most features that suit their medical facility for both medicine dispensing and charting of the patient's care.

Grocery Shopping

Today was the day to stock up on some good meat for the freezer. I like to get a large roast and have it cut in two for crockpot roast. Got carrots and onions so will make one this weekend. New Cars

Our brother and sister-in-law got a brand new 2011 gorgeous red Buick. It has all the bells and whistles and they are still learning many of them. It has heated seats which they love for winter traveling. However, they got a hit and run damage to their rear passenger bumper. They took it into the garage and found out it wasn't just scratches but there was something broken out underneath too and it is going to cost them $500. Why can't people be honest and tell you when they hit you? I suppose they didn't have any insurance so took off after they hit their car. They were on vacation so many times it was parked with other vehicles in parks, etc.

Depuy Lawsuit

Have you or anyone you know had a hip implant that is giving them problems? If so, please check with them and see if their implant is a Depuy implant. About 93,000 of these have been recalled because many people have had problems, swelling, and pain. It would appear to me that these people have a Depuy lawsuit and should get hold of a good law firm and see if they have a claim. I would really hate it also to have to go through a second hip surgery because the first one was faulty or defective. It certainly will affect a great number of people who had hip implants. I feel very sorry for them as I know a lady who died after her implant and now I wonder if it was a Depuy implant. We will never know.

Chinese Restaurant

We have a new Chinese restaurant in town. It is a great addition to our little town. My sister came up one Saturday and we went to lunch there. It is decorated really cute. The buffet had a great many choices on it and we had a very good lunch. I don't often eat Chinese but I love their sweet and sour and it was so good. I had some dishes I had never tried before and I think the restaurant has a real winner there. We used to have a Chinese place that closed and everyone was very disappointed as it did a big business but the family who ran it broke up and closed the restaurant. It was a big loss to the town so I am glad this new one has opened up.

My Sister

My sister came up for a visit and we had a real good time. We sat over fresh cups of hot tea and visited about the old days. She is 11 years younger than me so she missed out on the first 11 years of my life and there were many things she did not know. It was fun to tell her stuff she was so surprised to learn about. It isn't often that we can just sit down and talk. It seems everyone is so busy these days, even we retirees.

Flowers for our Anniversary

The flowers of Fall are really blooming now for the last time. It won't be long and we will have really hard freezes that will kill them off for the winter. The yellow Mums we have are really blooming and are so pretty. We received a beautiful vase of fall flowers for our anniversary and they lasted over a week and looked so nice. I have two hanging baskets that are really blooming right now and look so nice out in front of the house. I wish they could stay that way all winter.

Leaf Looking

That's what they call this time of the year and the people who go east in our state to drive along the Mississippi and see the turning of the trees into beautiful colors along the river. It is almost a ritual this time of the year to spend a weekend traveling to see the gorgeous colors of the trees and sumac along the roads. That is what we did for 3 days this year with relatives and had the best time. We spent some time too in unique little shops where you could see things you don't see at home. We stayed in a very unique motel that used to be an old button factory at one time and had a great deal of history. It was really neat. We had a great time.

The leaves are falling and the temperatures are dropping. Winter will soon be upon us and it has already cooled off considerably from what it was just a couple of weeks ago. Holly's Visit to the Vet

When we take a trip we board our little dog, Holly, at the Veterinary. They love her there and she is such a good dog. They give her treats, of course and spoil her so sometimes, she would rather stay there and eat treats than come back home :0) She spent 3 days there and had a good time. However, when she got home, she was so excited, she just ran and ran around the house. She was happy to be home again with us. Now she is asleep here by my computer.

Hospitals

It seems a lot of people have been getting infections at our big hospital lately. There has been a lot of staff and MRSA also. My brother had total knee replacement and about the 4th day they said they thought he had some sort of infection in the skin around the incision but it wasn't one of those infections. However, they put him on an IV first and then antibiotics for 10 days. I think Monday will be 10 days. Today he called and said they are going to recheck his knee because something isn't quite right. I sure hope it doesn't turn out to be serious as he was doing quite well yesterday with physical therapy.

DC Ranch - Scottsdale, Arizona

This is kind of a tough country to live in. The Spring was cold and wet and then Summer was kind of weird with hot, cold, wet, dry and now Fall is cold, then hot and now they predict rain. They say we are going to have a hard winter again this year. It will be very cold but maybe not quite as much snow. I want to get out of here this winter so I searched the Internet and found DC Ranch a lovely community in Scottsdale, Arizona. It has great golfing place with many other activities such as basketball, tennis and many places to have fun. There are a great number of sizes of homes and also many condos. I want to look into it further and the website gives me much information to help me make up my mind where I want to live. The scenery there is great and the area is also environmentally friendly which is a good thing as well.

83rd Birthday

My husband enjoyed steaks for his 83rd birthday last Thursday. We went to one of our favorite restaurants. We always have a good time there as we know the people who serve you and one of the hostess too. She always comes and sits a bit with us and visits. We had a really good time and the food was great. You get your meal free on your birthday so you can't beat that either.

Mild but Cold Winter

I was just reading the newspaper this morning. They were saying that we could have a very cold winter this year. However, there is supposed to be less snow than last year. We really got it last year so I would be happy for less. It is hard to get to your appointments when it snows a lot. It takes awhile for the roads to be cleared and you don't want to go in blowing snow. I am not looking forward to winter this year for the first time that I can imagine. I always said in summer you can't dress cool enough but in winter you can put on all the clothes you want and stay warm no matter how cold it gets. But now I am not looking forward to the snow and ice and cold.

Although Caucasions had been tracing their family lineages for hundreds of years it was felt that because of the issues of slavery and the number of times a slave may have been transferred from one place to another that this challenge would be an impossible one.

The fact of the matter is that thanks to a family tradition that managed to survive that was handed down from the first slave; Koonta Kinte, the challenge was made easier for Alex Haley, the sixth generation descendant of Kinte. Haley traveled to Africa and was even able to find long lost relatives he never knew. Aside from the appreciation of what Haley accomplished, the viewer also finds themselves lost in the storyline as they eagerly watch to see what happens next in this family's struggles. Adding to the mix the wonderful talents of acting greats such as Lorne Greene, Robert Reed, Louis Gossett, Ed Asner, Ralph Waite, Cicely Tyson, Chuck Conners, Carolyn Jones and of course LeVar Burton, you cant help but be drawn into the story when watching on satellite TV in New York.

Bought Groceries and Nothing to Eat

I had to buy Swifter duster refills, Swifter floor duster refills, the local Garbage bags and some cough syrup. It really costs to get necessities like that and also soap for the dishwasher and Downey for washing clothes. Then you get home with it all and there is still nothing to eat. Isn't that something? I did get bread, milk and cheese though and a couple bananas so that is something. However, it really costs for the other things you can't eat or feed your family.

Heavy Rains

We decided not to go shopping in the rain today. They told us we would have heavy winds and rain today and they were right. Tomorrow is going to be a better day. I have some new shoes to pick up in the nearby town so will wait until tomorrow. I have put off getting them for a couple months so another day isn't going to make any difference. I have been busy on the computer today anyway. The trees are really moving. The leaves and changing and falling too now. Hope October is a nicer month and we don't need more rain.

New Programs

I sure am glad to have the new TV season start. It was neat to watch 3 new programs last night for a change. I did run into a few re-runs this summer that I had missed. But it is better seeing the new ones again. My husband is watching a movie I am sure I have seen so glad I am on the computer. But I am about to go watch one of the new programs that are on tonight.

Curtains

I have been looking around for some new curtains. It is hard to find what I want in the sizes I want. Our local store had quite a few but in such dark colors. I want something white or bright. We will be going to the big super Wal-Mart store tomorrow so I can search their curtains and see what they have. Hope to find some the right size. I have been checking through the Internet to see what they have available online so have some idea of what to look for.

Cheese

Our Veterinary suggested we give our little Boston Terrier some sliced American Cheese every day. He said it was good for their stomach. So we have been doing that when we have lunch. It is so funny because she knows that and about 10 minutes before we prepare our lunch, she jumps up from a dead sleep and looks at us. She knows it is time for "Cheese" and she wants it. If you ask her if she wants cheese, she will bark and bark. She seldom barks so you know she is serious about it.

We have a cookie dough factory right in our town. They produce cookie dough in about 10 kinds in small buckets. They are for schools and other organizations to sell to make money for their organization. The little 4 year old girl next door came over yesterday selling cookie dough. How can you turn down a cute little girl selling something for her school for the first time. I got some chocolate chunk cookie dough and also white chocolate macadamia nut cookie dough. Next time I think I will try the sugar cookies.

Family is Growing

Production Jobs

I can remember back when we were first married my husband was just out of the Army. He began looking for production jobs because he didn't have a lot of education. However, he was brought up on a farm and he knew how to work. It didn't take him long to get a good job in a manufacturing plant. He was a great fork lift driver for many years. In those days you went door to door applying for work but the Internet has simplified things considerably. Sick Husband

When my husband asked to go see our doctor, I knew he was really sick. He has been coughing something awful and said he could feel it down in his chest. I quickly got him an appointment and we went right over to the clinic. They checked him over and gave him a nebulizer treatment to clear his lungs. He could breathe so much better. He also got one of those Z-packs of antibiotics to take. They always help him get well sooner. Sure glad we went to the doctor or he could have had a bad case of bronchitis.

Jobs

There seems to come a time in our lives when we get tired of our usual jobs. Then it is time to get out in the world and see what else is available. You may want to completely change your career. Many of my friends have done just that. They put in their time on their job and then decided it wasn't really where they wanted to be all their lives. Fall Colds and Cough

Besides all the stuff that is causing my husband a great deal of misery from allergies, now he has caught a cold. He is feeling quite miserable and weak. We have some good cough syrup that has helped him sleep well. That is one good thing. However, now he just came and told me he should see our doctor so I am calling the doctor to see if I can get him in to see her. Pizza Ranch Night

It was Pizza Ranch night tonight. They had a terrific salad bar and a huge variety of pizzas tonight. It is kids night so I think one kid eats free with every 2 adults. We counted 11 kids by the time we were done eating. There were mostly little boys but there was one little girl in a highchair that looked like she might be a year old. She had 3 brothers. She will be well protected when she grows up with 3 big brothers to look after her.

Holly's Eye Infection

Holly's eyes just kept getting red and more red so we took her to the Veterinary. He said she had some infection around her eye and gave us some salve to put on her eye lids. School Got Out Early

I heard this backup noise and there was the school bus about 2 hours early. I wonder if it got too hot in the classrooms again. Holly's Birthday

Holly will be 12 on the 25th of this month. It seems like yesterday that we got her as a little puppy. She is different in that she has a white face instead of the black mask most Boston Terriers have. She also has one blue and one brown eye. She has been having some infection around her eyes and the Vet says a lot of dogs have allergies at this time of the year. She had it last year too. We have 2 pills to give her and some lotion to put around her eyes twice a day for a week and hopefully by next Wednesday it will be cleared up. It looks better already.

Shopping at Wal-Mart

I really enjoy shopping at Wal-Mart. They have such a clean and organized store. We took two watches in the other day and the woman took links out of the wrist bands at no charge. High Wind Warning

We have a high wind warning here till 1 PM. I just felt my chair shake a bit and that is very unusual. The trees are taking a beating and those not strong enough, will surely go down today. Family is Growing

Our family has sure grown since we got married nearly 60 years ago. We certainly obeyed God's word to Adam and Eve to go forth and populate the earth. Here are two of the latest additions to our family in the past 25+ years. Our granddaughter is carrying little great grandson around in the latest type of baby carriers. He is getting really big though and I wonder how much longer she can do that. It hurts my back to think about it :0) He is really growing up quickly.

Clouds and Wind

The clouds are moving in on us and it went from a sunny day to a dreary day. The winds are terrific. I don't like it when they blow this hard. They can do too much damage. The neighbor has her clothes out on the line. They really dried today but if she doesn't watch them, they are going to blow away. I have seen that happen before. Our local barber retired due to old age and health problems. My husband just didn't know what to do after going to this barber for so many years. We will be heading for the Pizza Ranch for supper in a little while.
