North Korea Destroys Cooling Tower

The most visible of North Korea's atomic weapons program is the gray cooling tower that stood 60 feet above their main nuclear reactor complex. They blew it up in front of diplomats and TV cameras in a dramatic gesture of its commitment to stop making plutonium for atomic weapons.They did this at Yongbyon nuclear complex in response to concessions from the U.S.

At international arms talks with the U.S., China, Japan, China, and South Korea, North Korea delivered a declaration of its atomic programs under an agreement. World Condemnation Of Zimbabwe Grows

President Robert Mugabe faced deeper international isolation Wednesday with African states demanding that a discredited runoff election be postponed and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela rebuking the Zimbabwe leader for the first time. Tougher sanctions, sporting bans and economic boycotts could be next. World support may build for opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, who called Wednesday for talks on power sharing. Regional heads of state from southern Africa met in Swaziland and said Friday's runoff should be postponed until conditions permited a free and fair vote. President Bush said the runoff election appears to be a "sham", joining the international condemnation of Mugabe's actions.

Bear Stearns Hedge Fund

Thursday, two former Bear Stearns hedge fund managers were hauled into jail and charged with lying to investors about the collapse of the subprime mortgage market. This perhaps signaled the start of a wave of prosecutions arising from the housing meltdown. Mathew Tannin and Ralph Cioffi were accused of encouraging investors to stay in their hedge funds which were heavily exposed to subprime mortgages, even as they knew the credit market was in serious trouble. These were the first criminal charges to hit Wall Stree in the housing market meltdown. They were indicted on conspiracy and fraud counts. The eventual implosion of their two hedge funds cost investors $1.8 billion and started the domino effect that led the demise of Bear Stearns itself, which barely avoided bankruptcy in a rescue buyout by JP Morgan Chase & Co.

Rockets Fired At Israel

Rockets were fired at Israel on Tuesday shaking the Gaza Truce. Palestinian militants fired three homemade rockets into southern Israel threatening to unravel a cease-fire, days after it began. Israel responded by closing vital border crossings into Gaza. Israel refrained from military action despite what it called a "gross violation" of the truce. They said it would send an envoy soon to Egypt to work on the next stage of a broader cease-fire agreement which would mean a prisoner swap that would bring home an Israeli soldier held by Hamas for more than two years. I wonder if he is really still alive. I would not be surprised to learn that he has been killed.

President Bush, Iraqi President Discuss Troop Deal

FBI Arrests 345 in Children Prostitution Busts

Twenty-one children have been rescued and hundreds of people have been arrested in what the FBI is calling a five day roundup of networks of pimps who force children into prostitution. It is a good thing I don't have anything to say about it because I would just line them up in front of a firing squad and that would be the end of that. The Justice Department says it targeted 16 cities as part of its "Operation Cross Country" that caps off five years of similar stings nationwide. I think this is a shame to the nation. Many of the children were runaways or what people would call "throw aways" - kids whose families have shunned them. The pimps take advantage of their vulnerability. It is just sickening to me.

The latest news from San Fernando, Philippines is that bodies in life jackets washed up on islands and drifted at sea Wednesday as more than 100 divers probed deeper inside a Philippine ferry that capsized during a powerful typhoon. So far the divers have only found bodies, but the wer enot willing to give up hope of finding more survivors among the more than 800 people missiing since the seven-story ferry listed and went down Saturday. Transportation Undersecretary Maria Elena Bautista said she was still hoping for "A miraculous air pocket somewhere in the ship." There are 95 Filipino and eight American divers taking part in the search.

Nigerian Oil Field Shut Down After Attack

Militants in speedboats raided an oil installation off Nigeria's southern coastline on Thursday. This forced Royal Dutch Shell to slash production and exposed Africa's biggest oil industry as vulnerable even on the high seas. This was the farthest ever attack in the open ocean of the fighters of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta which is about 85 miles into the oil rich Gulf of Guinea. This group is Nigeria's most effective militant gang. Launched in 2006, its campaign of bombing pipelines and attacks on export facilities had already slashed Nigeria's daily oil output by about 20 percent. This helped send global oil prices to all time highs.

Oil Rises on Modest Saudi Increase

Monday, oil prices rose because of disappointment over Saudi Arabia's modest production increase and concerns that output from Nigeria will decline. Meanwhile, retail gas prices inched lower overnight but appear unlikely to change much as long as oil prices stay in a trading range. The gas prices are not dropping any around here. That is for sure. Saudi Arabia said Sunday at a meeting of oil producing and consuming nations, that it would add 200,000 barrels per day in July to a 300,000 barrel production increase it first announced in May. Thus raising total daily output to 9.7 million barrels. That pledge at the meeting fell far short of U.S. hopes for a larger increase.

GM to Raise Prices, Cut Production

It is no surprise to read that General Motors Corp. told dealers Monday it plans to raise prices on 2009 models by an average of 3.5 percent despite a tough market that is forcing the automaker to cut production and discount its 2008 models. In conference calls to dealers, the company officials said that the increases will allow GM to recover only part of the rising cost of steel and other commodities and the cost of safety and other features on the new models. Per vehicle, the increases will amount to about $1,000. I think they are so high now, you can't afford them. We used to trade every 2 years until this last time. Now we have had our car 5 years and have no intentions of trading it in. It is a beautiful car, actually a better style than a lot of those coming off the production lines now. Rain is on the way again. We have had more rain this Spring and now it is Summer. And it is still raining. I think it is in the forecast for everyday for the rest of the week. I hope it misses us. EU Agrees to Lift Cuba Sanctions

The news from Brussels, Belgium is that the European Union's external relations commissioner says the EU has agreed to lift sanctions on Cuba. The EU leaders feel they have to cooperate with changes in Cuba after Raul Castro took over as the head of the country's government from his ailing brother, Fidel. Some EU nations have been reluctant to lift the diplomatic sanctions. They say they want to see Cuba improve human rights first. Washington, which imposed a trade blockade in Cuba nearly 50 years ago, has no immediate plans to lift it. Some indications seem to show that Raul is worse than Fidel. Only time will tell.

President Bush Gets Good News From Britain

President Bush was handed good news on two fronts on Monday from British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. This is a modest increase in Britain's troops for the tough Afghanistan fight and a fresh European effort to squeeze Iran's nuclear ambitions. This prime minister is deeply unpopular and he seemed to calculate he had more to gain politically by being hawkish than he risked losing by appearing at the side of the also unpopular Bush. When the two leaders addressed reporters in a Foreign Office hall two days after the meetings, Brown talked tough on Iran, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and other issues. These announcements combined with earlier pledges by other allies, allowed the White House to crow that Bush was returning home from his week-long European trip with new commitments. Missouri and Mississippi Rivers Converge

Well now it has happened. The two rivers, which are flooding, are converging in Missouri. The flooding was the very worst of all in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Nashville

My brother and his friend took off for Nashville last Thursday. They went to Memphis yesterday. They took in Graceland and my brother called and said they really enjoyed it. That it was quite a place. We were there once but Elvis was still living in the house. The "Music" gate was closed. There were sharpshooters in the trees and he was well protected. Elvis loved Memphis and gave alot of money to the city for all kinds of things.

Springtime

It really feels like Springtime today. It was about 73 and not so hot or cold. We got the lawn mowed. It has been growing so fast due to all the rains. It was so nice not to have a cloudy day. It was wonderful to be outside for a change. Most of the week it seemed like we were inside looking out at the rain. The rain has caused alot of problems around here.

Washed Out

We went out for Mexican tonight and when we got to that town, the restaurant was closed. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why. The water had receded but there was still plenty nearby. We are having sudden storms here. Once minute the sun is out and the next minute the wind is blowing 50 mph. It is raining quite hard from the south this time. We just heard that two cities in Iowa are flooding and it keeps going on down south and flooding more and more. So many farmers are losing their crops. It is a serious situation.

Applebees Restaurant

Went out to supper tonight at Applebees in a nearby town. We have been noticing that the numbers of customers are dropping off all over. It doesn't matter where we go, there are less people eating out it seems. I am sure buying gas is taking priority over eating out. We don't eat out a lot and we go to cheaper places. I think from now on if we are going to plan to spend more money on a meal, it will be Carlos O'Kellys for great Mexican food - our favorite. Everyone is driving too fast and following too close too. We saw a 3 car rear-end collision just before we got to Applebees.

Mexican Foods

Last night was Mexican Food night at our favorite restaurant nearby. It was a nice sunny day and the rains had stopped. We did see ponds in the fields. The corn has really grown but a lot is drowned out. The farmers will probably have to replant beans instead. There is rain in the forecast for about the next 4 days. We got another inch of rain overnight and scared our dog again.

"Frasier" Star, Kelsey Grammer Has Mild Heart Attack

Kelsey lives in Kona, Hawaii now. He is only 53 years old. He was out Saturday Paddle-boarding with his wife, when he got the symptoms of a heart attack. Made a pot of goulash for supper tonight. Boy was that good for a change. Made a batch of banana nut muffins and they disappeared pretty fast. Think there is one left. Will be good with breakfast. Our little dog, Holly, seems to have a hip that is bothering her. Sometimes she will jump in her favorite chair (which is all of them) and then again she just walks around holding her head down. Guess we will have to ask the Vet if there is something we can give her for pain. She is allergic to a lot of things so we have to be careful.
