Furnace

Tuesday we had to get a new furnace. It is sure much more efficient than the old one so maybe our bills will be less. Hope so. It has a really different chimney on the roof and it puts so much more of the heat inside the house instead of up the chimney. Another thing I like is that the filters are so much easier to change. I really like that as I had to cut fiberglas to fit the other furnace. If you are allergic to fiberglas that is bad. Fortunately for me, it doesn't bother me much. As if that wasn't enough, both shutoff valves under the master bedroom vanity sprung a leak the same day and had to be replaced too but I am sure glad it is all done.

Amazon Reservation

Brazil's Supreme Court sided Thursday with Amazonian Indians in a land dispute. Some have called this land critical for determining the future of the rainforest that sprawls the size of Western Europe. One good thing, the court ruling upholds the Raposa Serra do Sol reservation for l8,000 Indians who lay claim to their ancestral land.

This, despite a handful of large-scale farmers who also occupy the territory in the northernmost reaches of Amazon jungle bordering Venezuela. This dispute over the 4.2 million acre reservation turned violent last year when authorities tried to evict the farmers.

Iraqis Go Free

Thousands of Iraqis, held without charge by the United States on suspicion of links to insurgents or militants, are being freed by this summer because there is little or no evidence against them. By early 2010, their release comes as the U.S. prepares to turn over its detention system to the new Iraqi government. In the six yeas since the war began, the military ultimately detained some 100,000 suspects. Many of these were picked up in the U.S. and led raids during a raging, blooding insurgency that has since died down. The effort to do justice for those wrongly held to begin with, some for years, also runs the risk of releasing extremists who could be a threat to fragile Iraqi security.

Dieting

Surprise, surprise, someone discovered the only way you are going to lose weight is to eat less calories. I guess that is too simple for people to absorb. They go out and buy all these plans and once the plan is done, they go back to their regular habits and the weight comes right back. Now they have actually published an article on losing weight and cutting calories. My husband has been saying that for as long as I can remember. He always says, just eat less and you will lose the weight you want to lose, and he is right. Why is that so hard to do? Because they throw all these treats and junk food at us and huge servings in restaurants. That is part of the reason and the rest is self-control.

Gift IDeas for Women

There are so many wonderful gift ideas for women. I have a number of women in my family who have birthdays soon. Today with all the changes in Television, I think a new digital tv would be a great idea for my daughter's bedroom. This great website carries everything you could desire in a gift. There are several sizes that would fit perfectly in her room.

With school being what it is today, she could certainly use a new laptop to help make her studies much easier. Electronics today are great buys and shopping this website makes it so easy. And with all her studying, she needs a break and have some fun so I feel a nintendo Wii would be ideal too. She can have her friends in and have a party with it too.

And of course, being a woman, she wants to look her best, so cosmetics and perfume are high on her list too.

Will Asteroid Hit Earth?

Did you know that in l908 a space rock measuring between 69 feet and 154 feet in diameter, hit Siberia and leveled more than 800 square miles of forest? Well, an asteroid about that size buzzed the Earth. They named it 2009 DD45 and it was about 48,800 miles from Earth when it zipped past early a week ago Monday. NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab reported on this. That would be about a fifth of the distance to the Moon or just twice as high as the orbits of some telecommunications satellites.

Although 48,800 miles may sound like a long distance, astronomer Timothy Spahr of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics said that was pretty darn close. Now they are keeping their eye on another one. They figure the next time an object will get closer to Earth will be in 2029 when an 885 foot asteroid called 99942 Apophis comes within 20,000 miles. I guess we were lucky last year when the asteroid 2008 TC3 burned up harmlessly over Africa in the Earth's atmosphere just 19 hours after it was discovered. If one ever hits Earth, it could destroy life as we know it.

NASA Hunts for Earths

Did you know that NASA has a planet-hunting spacecraft named Kepler? It is named after the German 17th-century astrophysicist. It has been launched and is going to be on the lookout for possible Earths in one faraway corner of the galaxy.

The telescope will spend 3 1/2 years staring at roughly 100,000 stars, measuring their brightness and any winks in the light that might signify orbiting planets. They are not sure what they will find but Ed Weiler, NASA's associate administrator for science thinks it will be sad if we are the only Earth in an empty universe and that we are the best there is. I disagree. We have enough Earth of our own and are basically happy in it, why should we want to find another one? What good would it do if you could never get there to see it? Who knows, though, they got to Mars, what could be next?

Withdrawal Plans Could Leave Thousands in Iraq

As they awaited details on President Barack Obama's plan to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq, Congressional leaders were skeptical. Although we would be withdrawing troops from Iraq, it will still be leaving tens of thousands behind. I don't think this is going to make the troops very happy.

Senior administration officials were expected to outline a plan that would bring most of the 142,000 forces home by August 2010. As many as 50,000 troops could remain for cleanup and protection operations. To me, it seems easy to set dates in the future and then when you get there, circumstances have changed. So seeing is believing.
