We went to the fish fry tonight in another town and ran into some relatives. They had just arrived from Sun City, AZ in their motor home. They live in Arizona year round. Court OKs Suits on Retaliation in Race, Age Cases

An unexpected blend of liberal and conservative Supreem Court justices gave workers more leeway Tuesday to use when they face retaliation after complaining about discrimination in the workplace. In two employment cases, one involving race and the other, age, the court took an expansive view of worker's rights. They avoided the narrow, ideology based decisions that marked its previous term. The justices read parts of an 1860s civil rights act and the main anti-age bias law to include the right to sue over reprisals even though neither provision expressly prohibits retaliation. I don't think there should be discrimination of any kind in the workplace and I thought it was much better today. But I guess there are still cases of it going on.

Senate Handed Bush War Funding Defeat

The Senate last Thursday ignored President Bush's veto threat and added tens of billions of dollars for veterans and the unemployed in his Iraq war spending bill. This just illustrated President Bush's diminished standing. A majority of Republicans broke ranks with Bush on a veto-proof 75-22 vote while adding more than $10 billion for various other domestic programs. These included heating subsidies for the poor, wildfire fighting, road and bridge repair and health research. Why can't they leave a simple bill alone and pass one at a time instead of loading them up with a lot of stuff that has nothing to do with the original bill. They really love to spend the taxpayers money, don't they? I am really disappointed in the Republicans. I expect it of the Democrats. They love pork barrel spending of any kind and they will tax the American people until they might as well just send in their paycheck for taxes.

Shooting Victims Get Posthumous Degrees

Hundreds of students ran screaming from the lecture hall three months ago to escape a gunman who had opened fire inside at Dekalb, Illinois. On Saturday while much of the rest of the campus celebrated graduation, a somber Laurel Dubowski stood outside the building's glass doors. She said she was still very sad and devastated. Earlier Saturday, she had walked onto an auditorium stage to accept a posthumous degree for her daughter, Gayle Dubowski, one of five students killed in a geology class in the red bricked Cole Hall on February 14. Three of the five students shot dead received posthuous degrees on Saturday. Families of the other two said they would accept degrees later.

NAACP Picks President

Last Saturday, the NAACP chose 35 year old activist and former news executive, Ben Jealous, as its president. This made him the youngest leader in the 99 year history of the nation's largest civil rights organization. He was formally introduced Saturday afternoon and will take over as president in September. Hormel Foods Profits Rise

Hormel Foods said their second quarter profits rose 14 percent. This was helped by falling pork prices and strong Spam sales. Beirut, Lebanon Talks Bog Down

The talks between rival Lebanese factions teetered near collapse on Monday. At that time, the Arab League mediators in Qatar pressed the parties to resolve the political strife that erupted into violence. This had pushed the country to the brink of civil war.The two sides are trying to negotiate a unity government under a deal that ended the fighting last week. A new parliamentary election law meant to ease 18 months of political deadlock and prevent more violence took effect. Clashes between pro-government groups and the Hezbollah-led opposition have killed at least 67 people.

38 Charged in Global Scam Network

You just cannot be careful enough. Thirty eight people were charged on Monday with stealing names, Social Security numbers,, credit card data and other personal information from unsuspecting Internet users as part of a global crime ring. These were Romanian based phishing scams sought to rip off thousands of consumers and also hundreds of financial institutions. This is accordiing to indictments unsealed in Los Angeles and New Haven, Connecticut. Phishing typically involves sending fraudulent e-mails that include links directing recipients to fake Web sites where they are asked to input sensitive data. Baseball Bat's Maker Sued

The family of a boy who suffered brain damage after he was struck by a line drive off an aluminum baseball bat has sued the bat's maker and others. They say the bat makers should have known it was dangerous. Steven Domalewski was 12 when he was struck in 2006. His family filed the lawsuit in state Superior Court. 90th Birthday Today

My good friend, Rose is 90 today. She is not in the best of health anymore. I am sad to say that. I hope she is able to enjoy the day. So any people know her. Apples, Oranges and Bananas

Don't you just love going by the cookie jar and getting a couple of good chocolate chip cookies? How about the candy dish full of little candy bars or Hershey kisses. My husband loves York mints but eats only one at night after supper. But the last 6 months we have purchased a great number of Figi apples and bananas and try to have them on hand all the time. Gunman Shoots Three Outside a Church

It is getting so you never know when someone is going to pull a gun and start shooting. This man shot at his ex-wife and two bystanders outside the church wounding all three of them. People were screaming and running every which way. It was pretty scary. They were having a church festival Saturday and were setting up outside the church.

Family Fun

We have had a lot of fun this weekend. Our grandson graduation reception was held yesterday. There was a big crowd and good food. It was neat to see everyone. Went shopping for a new computer chair while there. Then today we got together with many relatives and a niece we hadn't seen in maybe 48 years. She looks so much like her mother and she was a child when she moved away. So she didn't realize after her folks died that she had all kinds of relatives in this State. She flew in and we had a great afternoon of visiting, eating and taking pictures.

New Balance Shoes

Got a new pair of New Balance shoes last night. Had a $15 off coupon which really helps when the shoes cost $100. They last me about a year or close to it, though. We got gas in that town too for about 8 cents a gallon cheaper than at home. But it doesn't really save you a whole lot. We will be burning quite a bit today and tomorrow and next week. So might as well save where we can.

Dead Sea Scrolls

One of the most important Dead Sea scrolls is going on display in Jerusalem this week. It has been more than four decades since it was last seen by the public. It is a 24 foot scroll with the text of the Bible's Book of Isaiah and has been in a dark, temperature-controlled room at the Israel Museum from 1967. It went on display two years earlier but curators replaced it with a facsimile after noticing new cracks in the calfskin parchment. That was when the museum decided to put the scroll back on show for three months as part of Israel's 60th anniversary celebrations. The manuscript is priceless and was written by a Judean scribe around 120 B.C.. It was in a long glass case last Tuesday, its neat rows of Hebrew letters distinct and legible. President Bush, visiting Israel this week for the anniversary celebration, was one of the first to view it. We visited Israel 9 years ago and saw part of the deal sea scrolls in a museum in Jerusalem and our guide was able to read the Hebrew to us from it. It is very interesting.

Cleaners

We took my husbands sport jackets and one dress suit to the cleaners. It is very handy as we take then to the local grocery store. The cleaners from 30 miles away pick them up and return them a week later. It is sure handy in a small town. China Earthquake

Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed by a major earthquake in China. It wasn't far from Beijing. I can't imagine how those people are going to cope with all the bodies. There have been so many major castrophys lately. So many killer tornadoes and the big Cyclone that hit overseas and killed thousands. Bodies floating in the water. Disease is bound to be terrible there and everywhere that you have so many people dead. Times are changing and I think it is nearing the end of the age and life as we know it now.

Graduations

It is the season of graduations. One grandson just graduated from college. Another graduates from High School and his reception is Saturday. Another grandson is graduating from 8th grade Christian School and his party is next Thursday. We are going to be busy this weekend and next. Also have a cousin flying in from California for a family get-together on Sunday. Good food will be had at everything so will really have to watch it and not overeat.

We have a nice bed of yellow peony tulips up again this year. They are special because they are full like a peony and they have more than one stem so they have as man as 4 flowers per plant. They, like the hyacinths come up first every year and lend some color to the flower garden early. We watch the BBC quite often. They have good dramas on there. Last night we watched "Wire in the Blood", where a psychiatrist helps the police solve crimes. It is very interesting. I am interested in any kind of Police drama. It sure takes all kinds of people to make up the world. "Waking the Dead" is another good one where they solve cold cases.

Now here a great program that goes to all kinds of different cities in the United States. We even see them in a town about 120 miles from here. They chase down robbers and drunk drivers. They catch so many people with drugs in their cars. And they settle domestic disputes as best they can. Usually one of the people goes to jail overnight. I would think the cops would get frustrated taking people to jail, only to have them let out the next morning and they start all over again.

Law and Order

Here are more of my favorite programs. There are three different Law and Order programs and I love them all. I think my favorite though is Law and Order SVU (special victims unit). I love Merissa Hargetay. Her mother was a great actress and killed in a car accident when she was very young. Her dad was famous muscle man. I know I didn't spell her last name right but you probably know who I mean. She is a great actress and really makes the program. As you can tell, I sure enjoy them.

C S I is My Favorite TV Program

I just love CSI. I tape it so I won't miss an episode. Now in today's paper, I saw that one of my favorite stars on there got picked up for serious drugs. I sure hate to see something like that. Kobe Bryant Wins 1st Most Valuable Player Award

Finally, an MVP award for Kobe Bryant. Regarded as the NBA's best player for several years but never its most valuable, Kobe earned the honor at last on Tuesday after leading the L.A. Lakers to the best record in the Western Conference. He called the award a blessing and an honor and emphasized that he wants another trophy this year. "It's Hollywood, it's a movie script. The perfect ending would be for us to hold a championship trophy at the end of it," Bryant said. He said it wasn't an award he could have won on his own. He can't thank his teammates enough, club officials, his wife and two daughters. The Lakers try to take a 2-0 lead against Utah in their conference semifinal tonight. Bryant will receive the MVP trophy from commissioner David Stern before the game.

Farm Credit Services Quarterly Earnings Up

Farm Credit Services of America reported Friday that its earnings in the first quarter ended March 31 rose to $49.1 million, a 16 percent increase compared to $42.5 million in the first quarter of 2007. Loan volume for the Omaha based lender to agriculture increased by $734 million from year-end to $12.9 billion on March 31. The rise in the bank's net income came from an increase in net interest income. That was partially offset by an increase in non-interest expense and tax expense. Farm Credit Services of America has more than 72,000 borrowers in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming and assets of $13.5 billion.

Shiite Clerics Divided Over Crackdown

Shiite clerics offered sharply different visions Friday in the showdown between government forces and Shiite militias, one predicting that armed groups will be crushed in Baghdad and another calling for the prime minister to be prosecuted for crimes against his people. The contrasting views given during weekly sermons, showed the complexities and risks in the five week old crackdown on Shiite militia factions. The clashes have brought deep rifts among Iraq's Shiite majority. Sanctions Urged for Withholdiing Evidence

A district attorney whose office leads the nation in wrongful convictions overturned by DNA testing says prosecutors who intentionally withhold evidence from the defense should face criminal charges or other harsh sanctions. The worst offenders might deserve prison time, he said. New Mexico Wildfire Burns Nearly 60 Homes

Firefighters worked in cooler, calmer weather on Saturday to clear lines around a blaze that has burned nearly 60 homes and more than 20 square miles in the mountains of central New Mexico. The authorities were able to confirm that 50 homes burned Wednesday in a fire caused by humans in the Manzano Mountains, southeast of Albuquerque. Nine homes burned earlier. The 50 homes, most in an area called Sherwood Forest, west of the community of Toreon, went up Wednesday after the fire jumped containment lines. The total was conducted Friday and Saturday when the ashes from the 13,790 acre fire had cooled enough to allow authorities in.

Hugo Chavez May Expropriate Steel Maker

President Hugo Chavez is threatening to expropriate Venezuela's largest steel maker because he says shareholders are demanding excessive compensation for the company's nationalization. Chavez dismissed a request made by Sidor's parent company, Luxembourg based Ternium SA for $4 billion in exchange for a 60 percent stake in the steel maker. Chavez ordered Sidor nationalized earlier this month, taking sides with workers who fought for improved salaries and benefits. China Sentences 30 People Over Tibet Riots

Six Buddhist monks were among 30 people sentenced by a Chinese court Tuesday to jail terms ranging from three years to life for taking part in deadly riots in Tibet. The punishments were the first to be meted out by a Chinese court against Tibetans accused of taking part in a frenzy of assaults, burning, looting and vandalism mainly targeting Han Chinese and their businesses in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa and nearby areas March 14 - 16. The violence and subsequent government crackdown drew worldwide attention to China's human rights record and its rule in Tibet ahead of the Beijing Olympics. Celebrations marking 100 days to the start of the games will take place today. The sentences were announced during two sessions of a one day trial at the Intermediate People's Court of Lhasa, the official Zinhua News Agency reported.

Teen Charged With Killing Family

A boat with 100 people aboard sank in the Brazilian Amazon on Sunday, killing at least 12 people and leaving dozens missing. Suspect Charged in Officer's Slaying

One suspect was charged and a second one was being sought Sunday in the killing of a police officer who was shot with an assault rifle while investigating a report of bank robbery in Philadephia. Levon Warner, age 38, was charged with murder, robbery, conspiracy and related offenses. A second man, Eric Floyd, age 33, is believed to have escaped from a halfway house in Berks County. He is being sought on a homicide charge. A third man, Howard Cain, age 33 was killed by police. The dead officer was a 12 year veteran who would have turned 40 today. He was responding to a report of a robbery of a bank inside a grocery store.

Continental Airlines Will Not Seek Merger

Continental Airlines Inc. said Sunday it would not pursue a combination of another carrier right away. Oil Refinery Strike

Hundreds of workers at Scotland's only oil refinery began a 48 hour strike that has forced BPPLC to shut a pipeline system that delivers almost a third of Britain's North Sea oil. It had completed the closure of the Forties Pipeline System, when 1200 workers at the Grangemouth refinery in central Scotland walked off the job. The pipeline brings in 700,000 barrels of oil a day from the North Sea to BP's Kinneil plant, which is powered from the Grangemouth site. The strike which is over pension issues, could cost $100 million a day in lost production.The government urged motorists not to hoard fuel because then there would not be enough to go around. Truck Packed With People Crashes - 4 dead

A truck jammed with as many as 60 illegal immigrants crashed and rolled in a remote part of central Arizona on Sunday morning, killing four and injuring many. The truck was carrying possibly 50 to 60 people, man of whom ran into the desert. The driver is believed to be among them. Investigators believe the people on board were illegal immigrants. Four men were pronounced dead at the scene, while 27 survivors were taken to hospitals. Speed and possible alcohol are believed to be factors in the 5:30 a.m. crash near the town of Arizona City, about 60 miles south of Phoenix.
