Haitian School Collapse

Photo from CBS News.
This is a sad country to begin with. There is so much AIDS in this country that sometimes they wonder if any of Haiti will survive. Now they have had another disaster. A school, built on a hillside, collapsed on Friday killing at least 30 people. Over 500 students attend this terribly crowded school and many were also injured.

Rescuers used bare hands to pull bleeding students from the wreckage. It was believed that more children were buried under the rubble of the concrete building. It is thought that the school was poorly rebuilt after it partially collapsed 8 years ago. Some people even moved out below the school as they were afraid it might collapse one day and kill them. It is a good thing they did.

Banking Official Chosen for Haiti Post

According to Haitian radio, President Rene Preval has picked an international banking official to be the troubled country's next prime minister. Inter-American Development Bank senior official Ericq Pierre will succeed ousted Prime Minister Jacques Edouard Alexis. The appointment of Pierre as the country's no. 2 politician must be approved by Haiti's Parliament though. It was not immediately know when lawmakers would take up the nomination. During riots over food shortages, at least seven people died earlier this month and this is what cost Alexis his job. Haitian lawmakers fired the prime minister for failing to boost food production.
