Mexican "Cannibal" Kills Himself

A Mexican man accused of murdering his girlfriend and eating her body parts has been found dead in his prison cell. Jose Luis Calva was found hanging by his belt in the jail in Mexico City after apparently committing suicide. Mr. Calva was arrested on October 8, by police investigating the disappearance of his girlfriend, Alejandra Galeana. In his flat in the capital, they found her dismembered bod and a draft of an unfinished novel, Cannibal Instincts. The discovery also led to him being investigated in connection with the murders of his ex-girlfriend in 2004 and a prostitute, whose body was found in plastic bags in the city earlier this year. Officials said they were investigating how he got the belt he apparently used to hang himself when he was supposed to be on continuous suicide watch.

Taliban Suicide

A Taliban veteran of Guantanamo Bay killed himself with a hand grenade after he was cornered by security forces. He had become one of Pakistan's most wanted rebel leaders. Mehsud was wanted in many terrorist cases according to an Interior Ministry spokesman. He was a supporter of the al-Qaida terror network and an active Taliban commander in Pakistan. His death was a boost for Pakistani authorities under pressure from the U.S. to crack down on Taliban and al-Qaida militants fighting on both sides of the Afgan border.

Japan's Agriculture Minister Kills Himself

Toshikatsu Matsuoka has died in the hospital after reportedly committing suicide. The 62 year old was found hanged in his Tokyo apartment hours before he was to face questions in parliament over his links to a political funding scandal. Efforts to resuscitate him at the hospital failed. Officials said police were still investigating the cause of death. His resignation had been called for over unexplained expenses claimed for a rent-free office.
